Impact of physical and chemical heterogeneities on optimal remediation design and costs
Aksoy, Ayşegül (null; 2001-01-24)
The impact of physical and chemical aquifer heterogeneities on optimal remediation design and costs is investigated by linking a genetic algorithm optimization library with a contaminant transport simulation model. Various levels of physical and chemical (sorption) aquifer heterogeneities are examined. In the first level, heterogeneity is limited to the hydraulic conductivity (K) field. Then systems with heterogeneity in both K and the distribution coefficient (Kd) are considered. The final level of heterog...
Effect of heterogeneity correlation scale on pump and treat remediation design
Güngör Demirci, Gamze; Aksoy, Ayşegül (2006-05-25)
Pump-and-treat (P&T) remediation is a commonly used technology for the cleanup of contaminated groundwater. The long remediation time, high capital and operational costs are the most important problems associated with these systems. One of the determinants that affect the remediation design and its outcome is the spatial heterogeneity in the hydraulic conductivity (K) field. In this study, the effect of correlation scale (length) (lambda) of the heterogeneous K-field on P&T remediation design and costs was ...
Effect of drainage properties on seepage behavior of earth fill dams
Çalamak, Melih; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2016-09-23)
Earth-fill dams should be designed in such a way that excessive pore water pressures and seepage are controlled for attaining the desired safety level. This type of dams can be supplemented by some drainage facilities, such as blanket and chimney drains, which are commonly composed of graded soils. The key issue in designing a drainage facility is to promote the effectiveness of the system in reducing the pore water pressures and the seepage quantity. The performance of the drainage facility is based on its...
Role of chromium in Cr–Fe oxide catalysts for high temperature water-gas shift reaction – A DFT study
Yalcin, Ozgen; Wachs, Israel E.; Önal, Işık (2021-05-13)
Carcinogenic hexavalent Cr in the current iron oxide-based catalysts of high temperature water-gas shift (HT-WGS) reaction is great environmental concern. Interpreting the role of the Cr in this important industrial catalyst system is required. In the present study, we investigated substitution of Cr atoms into the most stable termination of Fe3O4 (111) slab surface by spin-polarized periodic DFT approach to comprehend the role of Cr. We applied the projector augmented-wave (PAW) method within the Perdew-Wa...
Effect of vadose zone on the steady-state leakage rates from landfill barrier systems
ÇELİK, BİRTEN; Rowe, R. K.; Ünlü, Kahraman (Elsevier BV, 2009-01-01)
Leakage rates are evaluated for a landfill barrier system having a compacted clay liner (CCL) underlain by a vadose zone of variable thickness. A numerical unsaturated flow model SEEP/W is used to Simulate the moisture flow regime and steady-state leakage rates for the cases of unsaturated zones with different soil types and thicknesses. The results of the simulations demonstrate that harmonic mean hydraulic conductivity of coarse textured vadose zones is 3-4 orders of magnitude less than saturated hydrauli...
