The effects of sensitivity analysis on the performance of turbomachinery blade design were evaluated. Sensitivities were obtained by both analytical and finite-difference approach. A sensitivity code was developed to analytically obtain sensitivities using the material derivative concept of continuum mechanics. Several design optimizations were performed to evaluate the merits of the analytical approach in comparison with the finitedifference approach. The results show that the analytical approach provides accurate sensitivities consistently, improves the convergence of the design cycle, and hence reduces the design cost. © 2000 The Amarican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. Effects of sensitivity derivatives on aerodynamic design optimization
Eyi, Sinan (Informa UK Limited, 2007-10-01)
The effects of sensitivity derivatives on the performance of aerodynamic design optimization were evaluated. Sensitivity derivatives were obtained by both analytical and finite-difference approaches. A sensitivity code was developed to analytically obtain sensitivity derivatives for the two-dimensional Euler equations using the material derivative concept of continuum mechanics. Several inverse design optimizations were performed to evaluate the merits of the analytical approach in comparison with the finit...
Improving the performance of simulated annealing in structural optimization
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Saka, Mehmet Polat (2010-03-01)
This study aims at improving the performance of simulated annealing (SA) search technique in real-size structural optimization applications with practical design considerations. It is noted that a standard SA algorithm usually fails to produce acceptable solutions to such problems associated with its poor convergence characteristics and incongruity with theoretical considerations. In the paper novel approaches are developed and incorporated into the standard SA algorithm to eliminate the observed drawbacks ...
Effect of cavity depth on thermal performance of a cooled blade tip under rotation
Sakaoglu, Sergen; Kahveci, Harika Senem (2019-11-01)
In this paper, the effect of cavity geometry of a squealer blade tip on its thermal performance is investigated. Numerical analyses were performed for three depth-to-width ratios for a cooled squealer tip. Also investigated is the effect of cooling introduction into the flow tip and the effect of rotation via the comparison of stationary and rotational domains where the latter was simulated by rotating the blade. The rotational speed and boundary conditions used in the numerical study are chosen to represen...
Effects of circumferential pick spacing on boom type roadheader cutting head performance
Eyyuboglu, EM; Bolukbasi, N (Elsevier BV, 2005-09-01)
Effects of equal and unequal circumferential pick spacing on the performance of boom type roadheaders having cylindrical cutting heads are investigated. For this purpose, two experimental cutting heads with equal and unequal circumferential spacing are designed and manufactured. The cutting head with unequal circumferential spacing is specifically designed to prevent tool-holder overlap at the nose section. Manufacturing difficulties associated with equal circumferential pick spacing due to tool-holder over...
