Management of the residual stress state has critical importance for fatigue life of the carburized steel components. The conventional methods of residual stress measurement are either destructive or have limited ability for in-situ measurement or take considerable time. Hence, there is a need for rapid, practical and reliable non-destructive method for measurement of residual stress. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method for evaluation of the surface residual stresses in the carburized SAE 8620 steel. Various samples having different residual stress states were prepared by changing carburization time at 900oC. The results of MBN measurements were compared with those of the X-ray diffraction method.

Nondestructive monitoring of the variations in microstructure and residual stress in carburized steels
Hızlı, Hüseyin; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2016)
Service life and performance of the case-hardened machine parts are greatly dependent on the residual stress state in the surface layers which directly affects the fatigue behavior. Recently, all industrial sectors have been requested for a fast and non-destructive determination of residual stress. This study aims to monitor the variations in surface residual stress distributions in the carburized 19CrNi5H steels by means of non-destructive and semi-destructive measurement techniques, Magnetic Barkhausen No...
Non Destructive Determination of Residual Stresses in the Spiral Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipes
Kaleli, Tuğçe; Gür, Cemil Hakan (2016-06-17)
The residual stress state has a vital effect on the performance and service life of the welded structures. Thus, development of rapid and reliable nondestructive techniques to measure residual stresses is a critical task. Various destructive or nondestructive methods exist with their advantages and limitations. This study aims to investigate the applicability of Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method to monitor the residual stress variations in the spiral welded steel pipes. In the experimental part, API 5L...

Measurement of residual stresses in the carburized steels by non destructive techniques
Hızlı, Hüseyin; Kaleli, Tuğçe; Gür, Cemil Hakan (null; 2016-10-01)
Residual stress state on the surface layers has a critical effect on the service performance and fatigue life of the carburized components. Non-destructive determination of residual stress state in a rapid and reliable way has being gained importance for industrial applications. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method for monitoring the residual stress variations as a function of carburizing process parameters. For this purpose, MBN and XRD measur...
Determination of surface residual stresses in carburised AISI 8620 steel by the magnetic Barkhausen noise method
Kaleli, T.; Gür, Cemil Hakan (British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT), 2020-07-01)
Management of the residual stress state is vital for the design and production stages of carburised components in order to satisfy the technical requirements related to performance, fatigue behaviour and useful lifetime. This enforces the use of practical, reliable and time- and cost-effective stress measurement methods by manufacturers. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method in rapid non-destructive determination of surface residual stresses in carburise...
