Transportation infrastructure facilities are the essential components for the continuous development of the economics and community well-being of any country. Maintaining such facilities at all times is a difficult task for service authorities. To assist in conducting such a task, bridge management systems (BMSs) have been developed for effective asset management. This paper presents a novel technique for evaluation of condition states of elements based on the intensity of different damage types. Damages of element types are expressed by the so-called weight factors which are named as the Maximum Impact Factor (MIF) and the Distribution Factor (DF) which are selected from a pre-defined set of criteria based on expert judgment. The impact factor indicates the effects of different damage types on the condition state of an element, whereas the distribution factor indicates the effect of intensity of certain type of damage on the condition state of an element. For a four-condition state system, two separate damages, both beings in the fourth state with different DFs, will have different effects on the condition state of an element. An application example is provided for evaluation of the condition state of an element in an existing bridge.

Evaluation of development readjustment share deduction from the puplic service areas with regard to public interest concept : the case of Turkish State Railways
Akar, Berrak; Kayasü, Serap; Department of City and Regional Planning (2017)
It is one of the most important tasks of the state to prevent unplanned urbanization and to provide healthy urbanization and infrastructure. Planning is also one of the most effective instruments used to accomplish this task. On that sense, planning appears as a significant tool which is used by central and local governments to provide public interest. The implementation of development plans which are guiding to the practices on physical space, enable the reflection of public interest to the space. The purp...
Evaluation of rail freight transportation in Turkey prior to deregulation
Cebeci, Alper; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Department of Civil Engineering (2019-3-16)
Rail freight is a major component of industrial development in a country, as it provides very cheap transportation opportunities for raw materials, such as coal, ores, etc. However, due to its stop-to-stop nature, it always requires a first- and last-mile connection with another mode, thus, has relatively longer total travel times. As a results, it can hardly earn the revenues necessary for its operations and has been heavily subsized by govermnets in many coun...
Evaluation of Walkability and Pedestrian Level of Service
Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (2018-01-01)
Due to decreasing resources, living in urban regions focus on sustainability in many aspects, including transportation. Sustainable transportation encourages non-motorized modes of walking and cycling as well as public transit (which also relies on walking while accessing a station), as well. However, walking as a mode is still a big mystery itself that needs further attention and research effort especially in the evaluation part. So far, the planners have discussed the concepts of walking and walkability, ...

Examining the maps of air transport network characteristics
Kılıç Depren, Serpil; Gökalp Yavuz, Fulya (2018-11-05)
Understanding the role of air transportation structure increases the economic and social assets in local and global scale. Identifying that role is required for an effective air transportation management, as well. Different methods are used to visualize, analyze network structures and to better understand complex network features of the air transportation. This study presents social network analysis as a method to extract information about the network through a pattern of individuals and communities. In a g...
