As shown by the centuries of research investigating its mechanism, electrification of dielectrics is a complex phenomenon. Here we demonstrate the power of the modern instrumentation and chemical methods in solving the mysterious problem of electrification at nano/molecular level. We have recently shown that upon charging of dielectric surfaces, (charged and uncharged) reactive species form. These species are imaged at their nanodomains, to display their coexistence and colocalization, by using combinations of edge modalities of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) such as Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM), PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanical Property Mapping (PF-QNM), and Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). The interactions of the reactive species are analyzed by combining these imaging modalities and chemical techniques. By this way, pure polymers, conventional polymer products, polymer blends and nanocomposites can all be analyzed for their charging/discharging behavior. This information not only provides “an image of the mechanism of electrification” that was not previously available at this level, but also helps to develop systematic (chemical) methods to prevent hazardous effects of electrification on dielectrics.

Witnessing pairing correlations in identical-particle systems
Aksak, Cagan; Turgut, Sadi (2021-12-01)
Quantum correlations and entanglement in identical-particle systems have been a puz-zling question which has attracted vast interest and widely different approaches. Witness formalism developed first for entanglement measurement can be adopted to other kind of correlations. An approach is introduced by Kraus et al., [Phys. Rev. A 79, 012306 (2009)] based on pairing correlations in fermionic systems and the use of witness formalism to detect pairing. In this contribution, a two-particle-annihilation operator...
Understanding cities and planning through complexity: Settlement pattern changes via urban transformation projects in Izmir, Turkey
Şanlı, Tuğçe; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine (2018-07-09)
Increase in the number of academic studies trying to explain cities by complexity science from the 1990s, is not only a coincidence (Batty, 2005; Portugali, 2000). There, planning, as a serious yet unpredictable ‘game’ full of challenges (de Roo et al 2016), is in need of proposing new approaches in order to deal with such complex systems, where planners and academics should realise the power and the capability of the process through strategic navigation (Hillier, 2011); recognise the understanding of multi...
Analysis of teleconnection patterns on climate of Northern Cyprus
Nabango, Hope Nabwire; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2019-9)
The complex interaction of components in the climate system has greatly contributed to uncertainty in climate patterns. Inarguably, anthropogenic factors have relentlessly increased this phenomenon. While innumerable research aimed at forecasting these interactions and their impacts on climate identify three streams of uncertainties as; model responses, external forcing factors and internal atmospheric variability, lack of knowledge on these factors have continue to challenge efficient results pertaining to...
Experimental investagation of drag reduction effects of polymer additives on turbulent pipe flow
Zeybek, Şerife; Uludağ, Yusuf; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
Since the discovery of the drag reduction effects of even small amount of macromolecules in solutions in turbulent pipe flows, there have been many experimental and theoretical studies in order to understand mechanisms behind this phenomenon. Theories have been proposed based on the observations on the change in the characteristics of the turbulent flow near the pipe wall where friction of the momentum transfer between the flow and the conduit takes place. In this study drag reduction in fully developed tur...
Inference of switching networks by using a piecewise linear formulation
Akçay, Didem; Öktem, Hakan; Department of Scientific Computing (2005)
Inference of regulatory networks has received attention of researchers from many fields. The challenge offered by this problem is its being a typical modeling problem under insufficient information about the process. Hence, we need to derive the apriori unavailable information from the empirical observations. Modeling by inference consists of selecting or defining the most appropriate model structure and inferring the parameters. An appropriate model structure should have the following properties. The model...
