Uneven distribution of seismic demand in asymmetric-plan structures is a widely investigated issue in the field ofearthquake engineering. Contemporary seismic design strategies, which are based on linear elastic behaviour of thestructure and employ uniform design parameters (single load reduction factor, etc.) throughout an asymmetric system, generally show poor performance in terms of realized ductilities and non-uniform damage distribution due to strongtorsional coupling associated with asymmetric-plan systems. In some cases, actual nonlinear behaviour of the structuredisplay significant deviation from what is estimated by a linear elastic seismic design. This study investigates ways topredict uneven seismic demand distribution among structural members of a single story asymmetric-plan system.Amount of overstrength present in a single story asymmetric structure is investigated parametrically. By providing ameasured amount of overstrength to the appropriate structural elements, an optimum design in terms of balancedinelastic seismic demands along an asymmetric-plan story is sought. The results obtained from the parametric study ofthe asymmetric system are utilized further to compile the Torsional Performance Spectra that is proposed as a designtool to estimate the seismic response of the actual multi-story asymmetric structures.

© 2021 COMPDYN Proceedings.Ductility demands observed in asymmetric plan structures due to earthquake excitations are investigated in this study. Torsional Ductility Spectra are utilized to estimate the maximum ductility response of such systems. Dynamic response of these systems are dominated by the lower vibration modes and observed seismic behavior is in conformance with the capacity design principles. In order to utilize the Torsional Ductility Spectra, five parameters of the asymmetric plan systems, na...
The role of overstrength on the seismic performance of asymmetric-plan structures
Kaatsız, Kaan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2019-04-10)
Uneven distribution of seismic demand in asymmetric-plan structures is a critical concern in earthquake-resistant design. Contemporary seismic design strategies that are based on linear elastic response, single load reduction factor, and uniform ductility demand throughout an asymmetric system generally lead to unsatisfactory performance in terms of realized ductilities and nonuniform damage distribution due to strong torsional coupling associated with asymmetric-plan systems. In many cases, actual nonlinea...
A stochastic approach in reserve estimation
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Informa UK Limited, 2006-12-01)
Geostatistics and more especially stochastic modeling of reservoir heterogeneities are being increasingly considered by reservoir analysts and engineers for their potential in generating more accurate reservoir models together with usable measures of spatial uncertainty. Geostatistics provides a probabilistic framework and a toolbox for data analysis with an early integration of information. The uncertainty about the spatial distribution of critical reservoir parameters is modeled and transferred all the wa...
Response parameters that control the service, safety and collapse performances of a 253 m tall concrete core wall building in Istanbul
Budak, Erhan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Çelik, Ozan Cem (2022-10-01)
Seismic performance of a 253 m tall reinforced concrete core wall building constructed in Istanbul, designed according to performance-based seismic design principles, is assessed for determining the response parameters that control the serviceability, safety and collapse performance limit states. Serviceability performance is evaluated under the 50-year wind and 43-year earthquake whereas safety performance is assessed under the 2475-year earthquake. Collapse performance is elaborated through incremental dy...
Comparison of fundamental properties of new types of fiber-mesh-reinforced seismic isolators with conventional isolators
Naghshineh, Ali Karimzadeh; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Caner, Alp (Wiley, 2014-02-01)
New types of fiber-reinforced rubber-based seismic isolators have been a research interest for a number of engineers in the past decade. These new types of isolators can have similar seismic performances compared with the conventional ones. In most of the previous researches, the fiber-reinforced rubber-based isolators is usually manufactured with placing fiber sheets between precut rubber layers with the use of a bonding agent. This research differs from the previous researches in terms of manufacturing pr...
