As a result of active volcanism and tectonism, the eastern Anatolian region in Turkey is represented by a high geothermal potential. In this study, we evaluate chemical and isotopic compositions of several geothermal springs in eastern Anatolia with emphasis on hydrochemical/isotopic characteristics and reservoir temperatures. Thermal waters were sampled in areas of Miocene volcanism (northeastern Anatolia) whilst some are collected in localities near historically-active volcanoes (e.g. Ağrı, Tendürek and Süphan volcanoes and Nemrut caldera) around Lake Van. Waters are mostly NaHCO3-type and their temperature, pH and electrical conductivity values are 16.26-81.30°C, 5.56-9.76 and 203-10434 µS/cm, respectively. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions (–13.5 to –3.4 permil (VSMOW) and –92.1 to –64.5 permil (VSMOW), respectively) coincide with the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL); however, some samples plot close to the Mediterranean Meteoric Water Line (MMWL). Tritium contents are in the range of 0 to 3.2 TU. Carbon (d13C (VPDB): –17.5 to +6.9 permil) and sulfur (d34S (VCDT): –5.5 to +45.7 permil) isotope compositions imply marine carbonates and terrestrial evaporate units as the main source of dissolved carbon and sulfate in the waters. Temperatures estimated by SO4–H2O isotope geothermometry fall between 40 and 200°C and are generally not in agreement with reservoir temperatures computed from chemical geothermometers (~130 °C). 14C contents of thermal waters around Lake Van fall between 0.8 to 6.0% pmC and are equivalent to corrected ages of 8.2 to 28.8 ka. Hydrogeochemical Properties of Geothermal Fields at Northeastern Anatolia
Aydın, Harun; Karakuş, Hüseyin; Mutlu, Halim; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Hılton, Davıd (null; 2016-05-16)
In Anatolia which is one of exceptional continental regions hosting both Neogene volcanism and tectonism, the geothermal potential is quite high due to unique geological and tectonic structures. In recent years, the geothermal resources in western Anatolia, whose geothermal potential is well defined, are successfully used in a wide range of applications such as energy production, district heating, thermal tourism and greenhouse heating. However, the geothermal resources of northeastern Anatolia (NEA) have b...
Thermal Modeling and Verification of PV Module Temperature and Energy Yield Using Outdoor Measurements for Ankara, Turkey
Tuncel, Bilge; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin; ÖZDEN, TALAT; Balog, Robert S (2018-11-14)
Ankara is in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey where the climate is dry-continental with an annual solar insolation of around 1750 kWh/m(2). In the transition to renewable energy, detailed analyses are required to ensure effective and economic utilization of the available solar resource. An essential part of these analyses is to calculate expected energy yield. For photovoltaic (PV) systems, this includes the effect of temperature on the PV efficiency, which determines the power yield of the PV modules....
Geothermal Resource Assessment of Alasehir Geothermal Field
Akın, Serhat (2017-02-15)
Alaşehir geothermal area located in Alaşehir Graben, West Anatolia – Turkey is the current target for geothermal field development. Currently, more than 6 operators are developing the power capacity in this field on a strictly competitive, and largely confidential, basis without significant exchange of resource information among them. Although there are three binary and a combined flash-binary power plants with widely changing power generation efficiency between plants, additional new plant capacity will be...
Lake Hazar: a potential high-resolution 150 ka record of climate and tectonic interactions in Anatolia
Boes, Xavier; Moernaut, Jasper; Avşar, Ulaş; Çağatay, Namık; Hubert-ferrari, Aurelia (2008-12-19)
Over the last decade, a tremendous number of researches on climate and tectonic interactions have converged on Turkey, mostly on the NAF (North Anatolian Fault) near Istanbul. For example, the Marmara Sea has been the focus of an increasing number of international drilling projects, as the marine sediments of this region provide long-term climate and tectonic reconstructions. Comparatively, the EAF (East Anatolian Fault) is far from the sea and is few documented in terms of geological records (i.e. Lake Van...
Geothermal energy potential and utilization in Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, Ersoy (Elsevier BV, 1988-3)
The regional distribution of the geothermal energy potential in Turkey, recent surveys, and utilization areas are described. The present and future roles of geothermal energy and their economic aspects are discussed. The implications of geothermal energy exploration and utilization are noted. Recommendations are made to expand geothermal-energy development.
