An approach to optimum hydraulic design of diversion weirs

2000-06-20
A computer-assisted method is developed for the optimum hydraulic design of diversion weirs. With a number of relevant input parameters and a known design irrigation discharge, which can be estimated according to the project requirements of an irrigation field composed of a desired crop pattern, the overall dimensions of a diversion weir are determined. The program tests various combinations of dimensions for the structural elements, ie. intake, settling basin, spillway, energy dissipater, etc., within the recommended ranges of hydraulic requirements. The alternative with the desired hydraulic performance and having the minimum total cost is then proposed. The use of the program enables a designer to compare several alternatives in terms of hydraulic conformity, structural safety levels and cost. An application is presented to illustrate the capabilities of the program.

An Exploration of numerical approaches to Boltzmann equation regarding hydrodynamics
Şahin, Alper; Tarman, Işık Hakan; Department of Engineering Sciences (2019)
The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has become an alternative tool in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. While traditional CFD methods are based on Navier-Stokes equations that describe the fluid in terms of macroscopic quantities, LBM takes a mesoscopic description of the fluid thus closing the gap between macroscale and microscale. Overall, LBM provides a simple and efficient framework for simulation of fluid flows. In this approach, Boltzmann kinetic equation with BGK collision operator is dis...
AN ENERGY APPROACH TO SLIDING OF SINGLE-SPAN SIMPLY SUPPORTED SLAB-ON-GIRDER STEEL HIGHWAY BRIDGES WITH DAMAGED BEARINGS
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 1995-03-01)
This paper investigates the non-linear inelastic seismic response of existing single-span simply supported bridges having bearings which can remain stable and slide after their anchor bolts are ruptured. A simplified equivalent model is developed for the inelastic analysis of these single-span simply supported bridges. Non-linear inelastic time-history analyses are conducted for various acceleration inputs. It is found that narrower bridges with longer spans may have considerable sliding displacements and f...
Investigation of interaction between pressure relief valve and turbines during a transient flow in hydropower plant
Çetintaş, Mehmet Ali; Bozkuş, Zafer; Çelebioğlu, Kutay; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-2)
The main goal of the present study is to investigate the effect of pressure relief valve (PRV) on the hydraulic transients generated by multiple turbine operations. To achieve this goal, a numerical model of KEPEZ-I Hydropower plant is constructed in the Bentley HAMMER software, which employs the Method of Characteristics (MoC) for computations. The MoC has been proven worldwide as a versatile and accurate tool for solving non-linear, hyperbolic, partial differential equations in space-time domain for hydra...
A study on the stress-strain behavior of railroad ballast materials by use of parallel gradation technique
Kaya, Mustafa; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
The shear strength, elastic moduli and plastic strain characteristics of scaled-down ballast materials are investigated by use of the parallel gradation technique. Uniformly graded ballast materials chosen for the investigation are limestone, basalt and steel-slag. Steel-slag is a byproduct material of Eregli Iron and Steel Works, which is suitable to meet the durability test requirements as well as the electrical resistivity and the waste contaminants regulatory level. Conventional triaxial testing at a st...
A Mathematical Model for Simulation of Flow Rate and Chamber Pressures in Spool Valves
Afatsun, Ahmet C.; Balkan, Raif Tuna (ASME International, 2019-02-01)
In this paper, a mathematical model to simulate the pressure and flow rate characteristics of a spool valve is derived. To improve the simulation accuracy, the discharge coefficient through the spool valve ports is assumed to be a function of both the Reynolds number and the orifice geometry rather than treating it as a constant. Parameters of the model are determined using the data obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses conducted on two-dimensional axisymmetric domains using ANSYS FLUENT 1...
