The feasibility of the use of the Navier-Stokes equations in aerodynamic design is examined. The Navier-Stokes equations can include the rotational viscous physics at transonic speeds, and hence are expected to produce more reliable design. The target pressure is specified and a least- square optimization is used to minimize the pressure discrepancy between the target and designed airfoils. The sensitivity analysis which determines the response of the flow to a geometry perturbation is performed based on a finite difference evaluation. The performance of the design method is evaluated with various design practices.

Inverse airfoil design using the Navier Stokes equations

Parallel, navier-stokes computation of the flowfield of a hovering helicopter rotor
Geçgel, Murat; Özyörük, Yusuf; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2003)
The aim of this study is to extend a parallel Fortran90 code to compute three6dimensional laminar and turbulent flowfields over rotary wing configurations. The code employs finite volume discretization and the compact, four step Runge-Kutta type time integration technique to solve unsteady, thin6layer Navier6Stokes equations. Zero6order Baldwin6Lomax turbulence model is utilized to model the turbulence for the computation of turbulent flowfields. A fine, viscous, H type structured grid is employed in the co...
Aerodynamic shape optimization of a wing using 3d flow solutions with su2 and response surface methodology
Yıldırım, Berkay Yasin; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2021-4)
In this study, the aerodynamic shape optimization of a wing is performed by using 3D flow solutions together with response surface methodology. The purpose of this study is to optimize the aerodynamic shape of a wing to achieve the lowest possible drag coefficient while ensuring desired maneuvering capability and lateral stability. Aerodynamic shape optimization is performed for a wing of a turboprop trainer aircraft. Optimization objective and constraints are determined according to mission requirements an...
Nonlinear resonances of axially functionally graded beams rotating with varying speed including Coriolis effects
Lotfan, Saeed; Anamagh, Mirmeysam Rafiei; Bediz, Bekir; Ciğeroğlu, Ender (2021-11-01)
The purpose of the current study was to develop an accurate model to investigate the nonlinear resonances in an axially functionally graded beam rotating with time-dependent speed. To this end, two important features including stiffening and Coriolis effects are modeled based on nonlinear strain relations. Equations governing the axial, chordwise, and flapwise deformations about the determined steady-state equilibrium position are obtained, and the rotating speed variation is considered as a periodic distur...
COMPARATIVE STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION STUDY OF COMPOSITE AND ALUMINUM HORIZONTAL TAIL PLANE OF A HELICOPTER
Arpacıoğlu, Bertan; Kayran, Altan (2019-11-11)
This work presents structural optimization studies of aluminum and composite material horizontal tail plane of a helicopter by using MSC. NASTRAN SOL200 optimization capabilities. Structural design process starts from conceptual design phase, and structural layout design is performed by using CATIA. In the preliminary design phase, study focuses on the minimum weight optimization with multiple design variables and similar constraints for both materials. Aerodynamic load calculation is performed using ANSYS ...
