Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events are recorded as black shale deposits in Mid-Barremian, Aptian, Cenomanian/Turonian stages in different basins in Turkey. The Mid-Barremian black shales (MBE) have been recorded within a turbidite succession in a deep marine setting in central Sakarya zone of Pontides (YILMAZ et al., 2012). 2 ‰ shifts in the carbon isotope curve are recorded in parallel with European basins, but with low TOC values. The Aptian black shales (OAE1a) are recorded in pelagic carbonate slope environments in central Sakarya zone of Pontides and represented by a negative carbon isotope shift with 2 ‰, and TOC around 2 % (YILMAZ et al., 2004; HU et al., 2012). The C isotope curve is well correlated to those of European basins and this indicates common paleoceanographic conditions. In the Sakarya zone of Pontides, OAE2 is recorded in pelagic carbonate slopes (YILMAZ et al., 2010) with a carbon isotope curve characterized by a > 1 ‰ positive shift and > 2 % TOC. A further section through the OAE2 was recorded in Antalya Nappes of Taurides with TOC > 20 % (YURTSEVER et al., 2003; BOZCU et al., 2011). The OAE1a and OAE2 levels recorded in Turkey can easily be correlated with European examples and were mainly controlled by sea level and tectonics during large-scale and climate and oceanographic changes on a small scale. However, MBE was recorded on the drowned carbonate platform in Pontides and interpreted as mainly controlled by tectonics. The most extensive distribution of the OAE records in Turkey belongs to OAE1a and OAE2, and display potential for the presence of source rocks for hydrocarbon exploration.

Jurassic arc volcanism on Crimea (Ukraine): Implications for the paleo-subduction zone configuration of the Black Sea region
Meijers, M. J. M.; Vrouwe, B.; van Hinsbergen, D. J. J.; Kuiper, K. F.; Wijbrans, J.; Davies, G. R.; Stephenson, R. A.; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Matenco, L.; Saintot, A. (2010-10-01)
The early Cretaceous and younger opening of the Black Sea has obliterated much of the older record of Tethyan subduction below southeastern Europe. The earlier Mesozoic evolution was dominated by opening and closure of Tethyan oceans between Gondwana and Laurasia with their consumption, at least in part, accommodated along the southern Eurasian margin. Crimea (Ukraine), a peninsula in the northern Black Sea, represents the northernmost region of southeastern Europe that exposes a record of a pre-Cretaceous ...
Cretaceous Evolution of the Central Asian Proto-Paratethys Sea: Tectonic, Eustatic, and Climatic Controls
Kaya, Mustafa Yücel; Dupont-Nivet, Guillaume; Proust, Jean-Noël; Roperch, Pierrick; Meijer, Niels; Frieling, Joost; Fioroni, Chiara; Altıner, Sevinç; Stoica, Marius; Aminov, Jovid; Mamtimin, Mehmut; Guo, Zhaojie (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 2020-09-01)
The timing and mechanisms of the Cretaceous sea incursions into Central Asia are still poorly constrained. We provide a new chronostratigraphic framework based on biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy together with detailed paleoenvironmental analyses of Cretaceous records of the proto‐Paratethys Sea fluctuations in the Tajik and Tarim basins. The Early Cretaceous marine incursion in the western Tajik Basin was followed by major marine incursions during the Cenomanian (ca. 100 Ma) and Santonian (ca. 86 Ma...
Cretaceous and Triassic subduction-accretion, high-pressure-low-temperature metamorphism, and continental growth in the Central Pontides, Turkey
Okay, A. I.; Tuysuz, O.; Satir, M.; Altıner, Sevinç; Altıner, Demir; Sherlock, S.; Eren, R. H. (2006-09-01)
Biostratigraphic, isotopic, and petrologic data from the Central Pontides document major southward growth of the Eurasian continental crust by subduction-accretion during the Cretaceous and Triassic Periods. A major part of the accreted material is represented by a crustal slice, 75 km long and up to 11 km thick, consisting of metabasite, metaophiolite, and mica schist that represent underplated Tethyan oceanic crustal and mantle rocks. They were metamorphosed at 490 degrees C and 17 kbar in mid-Cretaceous ...
Triassic Foraminifera from the Great Bank of Guizhou, Nanpanjiang Basin, south China: taxonomic account, biostratigraphy, and implications for recovery from end-Permian mass extinction
Altıner, Demir; Lehrmann, Daniel J.; Altıner, Sevinç; Summers, Mindi M.; Yu, Meiyi (2021-12-01)
Foraminifera are important components of tropical marine benthic ecosystems and their recovery pattern from the end-Permian mass extinction can yield insights into the Mesozoic history of this group. Here we report the calcareous and agglutinated foraminifera recovered from five measured stratigraphic sections on the Great Bank of Guizhou, an uppermost Permian to Upper Triassic isolated carbonate platform in the Nanpanjiang Basin, south China. The material contains >100 Triassic species, including three tha...
Cretaceous pelagic red beds and black shales (Aptian-Santonian), NW Turkey: Global oceanic anoxic and oxic events
Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer (2008-04-01)
The study areas located near the towns of Goynok, Muclurnu and Nallihan in the central northwestern part of Turkey lie on the 'Sakarya Continent', which is one of the tectonic entities of the Cretaceous geology of Turkey. Measured stratigraphic sections comprise the Aptian pelagic carbonates and the overlying Albian-Coniacian turbiditic sequences, which are all capped by a Late Santonian red pelagic succession. Lower and Upper Aptian, Upper Albian and Cenomanian/Turonian marine black shales recognized in th...
