Provisions for the Seismic Risk Evaluation of Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings in Turkey under the Urban Renewal Law
Binici, Barış; Yakut, Ahmet (SAGE Publications, 2015-08-01)
A law known as the "Urban Renewal Law" for risk mitigation was passed in Turkey in May 2012. The major focus of the law is to reduce the expected seismic risk due to the vulnerability of existing buildings. For this purpose, new provisions are set forth to investigate and to classify seismically vulnerable residential buildings as quickly as possible. Afterward, such deficient buildings are demolished, and new buildings are constructed through the financing options provided by the government. Although the s...
Developing flood mitigation measures for the northern part of Nicosia
Zaifoglu, H.; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Akintug, B. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-09-01)
This study aims to examine a set of alternatives as remedial measures for the flood management purposes in order to protect the northern part of Nicosia which has been affected by major flooding events in recent years. In this context, at first, in order to obtain the run-off hydrographs at the entrance of reservoirs, the hydrological modelling of the ungauged catchments of Kanlikoy and Gonyeli Reservoirs which are located at the upstream part of the city was performed. In the simulation of these rainfall–r...
A Prioritized New Call Queuing Policy for Multimedia Wireless Cellular Networks
Abdulova, Vassilya; Aybay, Isik (2011-05-01)
This paper proposes a novel prioritized new call queuing mechanism for handoff prioritizing schemes. In order to increase the total carried traffic, the proposed approach decreases the blocking probability of new calls by reducing the number of connection reattempts. The proposed queuing policy predicts the time mobile station will spend in the current cell and queues the new calls with high predicted remaining time as they will make more reconnection attempts then calls with low remaining time. We show thr...
Planning for the closure of uncontrolled landfills in Turkey to reduce environmental impacts
Senturk, Didar Ergene; Alp, Emre (2016-11-01)
Landfilling is the most preferred solid waste disposal method in Turkey owing to both economic and technical reasons. However, beside the sanitary landfills there are also hundreds of uncontrolled waste sites located throughout Turkey, which are often left either abandoned or burning. Because there is a lack of legislative guidelines governing the closure and rehabilitation of these dumpsites, the municipalities that are responsible for waste management do not initiate the proactive strategies required for ...
