Güneş ve Rüzgâr Enerjisinin Kullanan Tekneler: Volitan Örneği

2014-01-01
As the climate change obliges the reduction of carbon emissions in almost each industry, the use of renewable energies have become more promising as an alternative to oil dependent systems. Within the maritime industry, global transportation emissions are reported as a major carbon dioxide source that releases twice as much as air transportation (Vidal, 2007). The number of hydrocarbon-burning marine engines is more than 10 million only in the US (Price, 2008). As stated in AirClim’s report (2011), global greenhouse gas emissions from ships calculated to correspond to 3.3 percent of total global manmade emissions in 2007. Moreover, this global impact is expected to double or even triple by 2050 unless necessary policies are enacted. Today, boats using solar and wind energy are being developed as alternatives to fossil fuel dependent vehicles. Technologies and materials are advancing in a way that enable high performance yet clean and inexpensive sea vessels. Instead of fossil fuel dependent sailing crafts, eco-friendly water vessels with near zero emissions are being developed, as the pre-industrialized sail boats. Recent experimental projects and research has proved that more sustainable means of transportation is possible in marine design. With a goal of creating an environmentally friendly boat alternative, Volitan is a boat that uses solar and wind power and incorporates composite materials to for an increased performance. The Volitan Project underlines the potential of alternative energy use, and highlights contemporary materials and technologies in sail-vessels design for further exploration.

Wide-band perfect metamaterial absorber for solar cells applications
Rufangura, Patrick; Sabah, Cumali; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2015-8)
Global adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells as a sustainable substitute to fossil fuel technologies has been impeded by its low efficiency. Generally, efficiency of these devices strongly depends on their ability to absorb radiations of electromagnetic waves incident on them. Their low absorptivity provides a challenge. Metamaterials (MTM) based solar cells offer an opportunity for increasing the system efficiency by enhancing the total absorbed solar radiation incident on solar PV cells. In this thesi...
Light trapping micro and nanostructures fabricated by top down approaches for solar cell applications
Altınoluk, Hayriye Serra; Turan, Raşit; Akın, Tayfun; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2016)
For an ultimate victory of solar energy over polluting fossil fuels, we need to decrease the cost of electricity generated from the sun. The technology based on photovoltaic (PV) solar cell is offering the most promising alternative in this energy conversion. However, this can be possible only if we can reduce the cost of solar cell fabrication and/or increase the conversion efficiency. In order to increase the performance/cost ratio of solar cells, new approaches reducing optical and electrical losses are ...

High greenhouse gas emissions increased the importance of renewable energy resources. Hydropower is among the most widely used type of renewable energy. Oppositions to big hydropower projects with reservoirs increased the use of small hydropower plants. Development of a small hydropower project is a challenging engineering task. Different software’s are developed and used to make initial estimations of energy generation and initial costs of the project. RETScreen Clean Energy Analysis Software which can be ...
Feasibility analysis of Turkey-North Cyprus submarine electric interconnector cable including externalities
Rasheed, Ahmad; Fahrioğlu, Murat; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2019-8)
Heavy dependency of electrical industry on fossil fuels have led to overexploitation of natural resources, which causes emission of greenhouse gases and climatic change. This depletion urged the exploration of renewable energy resources and its integration in electric grid system, thus the current infrastructure of grid systems needs a transition towards renewable energy to make the most of it. Small islands and remote areas, which are highly depended on fossil fuels have a chance to reduce their carbon emi...
A Study on new Turkish ground snow load map and snow damage prevention recommendations for solar power plants
Temel, Özlem; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2020)
Renewable energy sources have become an environment friendly alternative to fossil fuels. As a renewable source, solar energy becomes widespread under favor of decreasing costs in Photovoltaic (PV) cell production. Similar to the growth trend in the world, total production capacity of installed Solar Power Plants (SPP) have recently reached over 5 GW in Turkey. In a typical SPP, PV modules are mounted on steel supporting structures with a site-specific inclination angle. In the last years, damage of many PV...
