This study aims at determining the geotechnical properties and the compaction permeability characteristics of a clayey soil sample obtained from the Göbaşi site of the Ankara region in an attempt to assess its suitability as a compacted clay liner. The soil sample was permeability tested at about 3% wet of its optimum moisture content using the falling head compaction permeameter apparatus. The expected leakage rates through clay-only and composite geomem-brane-clay liners constructed with compacted Ankara clay were determined. The potential effectiveness of a landfill leachate collection layer was thereby assessed. The results of the geotechnical tests and leakage rate calculations show that Ankara clay is suitable to be utilized as a compacted clay landfill liner material.

Geotechnical evaluation of Ankara clay as a compacted clay liner
Met, Ilker; Akgün, Haluk (2015-08-01)
This study investigates the geotechnical properties, and mineralogical and permeability characteristics of "Ankara clay" to evaluate its suitability as a compacted clay landfill liner material. The geotechnical index properties of the clayey soil samples collected from the western part of Ankara were determined. All the soil samples were tested for permeability by means of falling head compaction permeameter apparatus. The mineralogy of the soil samples were examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electr...

Experimental determination of hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients for heavy metals using compacted clay
Camur, MZ; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2001-07-27)
Mass transport of ions through the Ankara clay liner, which was prepared under three different compaction conditions, was studied experimentally on the basis of sorption, advection and hydrodynamic dispersion processes. Under optimum compaction conditions, effective porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the material were 0.32 and 0. 13-0.26 x 10(-8) cm s(-1), respectively. Effective diffusion coefficients of Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ions were, respectively, 2.54, 9.51, 2.22, 2.85, 2.22,...
Assessment of the effect of mineralogy on the geotechnical parameters of clayey soils: A case study for the Orta County, Çankırı, Turkey
Akgün, Haluk; Arslan Kelam, Arzu; Oner, Gokalp; Koçkar, Mustafa Kerem (2018-11-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate and relate the geotechnical parameters with the mineralogical properties of the Miocene and Plio-Quaternary (Pliocene to Quaternary) lacustrine and fluvial sediments, particularly clayey soils in the Orta County, cankiri. The study area is located about 110 km northeast of Ankara which is the capital city of the Republic of Turkey and Orta is a small county of cankiri. The study area is a structural depression in the northern part of the Orta plain which is filled...
Composite landfill liner design with Ankara clay, Turkey
Met, İlker; Akgün, Haluk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-04-01)
This study presents an overview of the geotechnical properties of the clayey soils, referred to as "Ankara clay", at two sites of the Ankara region in an attempt to design a landfill profile composed of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane/clay composite liner through the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model and the Water Balance Method. The geotechnical properties of the landfill layers along with the water balance factors (i.e., evapotranspiration, precipitation, temperatur...
