Hydrocarbon production is usually restricted by excess water production in naturally fractured reservoirs. Polymergel injection is an efficient method to shut-off fracture conduits in water bearing zones. Efficiency of water shut-offmay decrease in time due to several reasons. Well diagnostic methods such as recovery plot, production history plotand decline curve analysis can be used to identify necessity to re-gel the well. Both of the surveillance methods requiresome sort of analytical modeling and may not identify performance loss in due time. In this study, we propose theuse of pressure build up test analysis as diagnostic tool to optimize re-treatment time. To achieve this goal a highlyfractured heavy oil reservoir going through polymer injection is modeled using discrete fracture network (DFN)modelling approach where it is used as a tool for providing fracture properties to the dual-porosity fluid flow simulator.DFN model is created by using available fracture parameters. The model is then calibrated by conditioning it to welltest data obtained from a heavily fractured field located in South East Turkey. A CMG STARS single well/dualporositynumerical model whose fracture properties are populated by the DFN model results is used to model polymerinjection. Once the matches obtained with DFN populated dual porosity model were obtained, several syntheticpressure build up tests were conducted to estimate skin factor as well as permeability which are markers used for regeltreatment performance. It was concluded that well test analysis is an efficient tool to estimate the time of re-geloperation.

Waste water disposal: Polluted aquifer cleanup optimization by using genetic algorithms
Gumrah, F; Erbas, D; Oz, B; Altintas, S (2000-07-01)
Water produced constitutes a large amount of waste fluids during the production operation of an oilfield. Underground injection for disposing of the wastewater from hydrocarbon production is an engineering problem due to the possibility of leakage of injected pollutant material from the receiving medium to a drinking-water source.
Genetic algorithms for optimizing the remediation of contaminated aquifer
Gumrah, F; Erbas, D; Oz, B; Altintas, S (2000-11-01)
Produced water constitutes a large amount of waste fluids during the production operation of an oil field. Underground injection for disposing the wastewater from hydrocarbon production is an engineering problem due to the possibility of leakage of injected pollutant material from receiving medium to a drinking water source. This paper describes a method for optimization of polluted aquifer remediation design using one of the artificial intelligence optimization methods, namely Genetic Algorithms (GAs). As ...
Numerical modeling of seawater groundwater relationships in the Selçuk sub basın, İzmir Turkey
Hassan, Abubakr; Çamur, Mehmet Zeki; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
Seawater-fresh groundwater natural equilibrium conditions in the aquifers of the Selçuk sub-basin may be disturbed by the discharge occurred during the past 30 years in order to supply water for irrigation and domestic purpose usage. Two dimensional density dependent cross sectional saturated flow and solute transport simulations were carried out to determine whether seawater intrusion has occurred in the Selçuk sub-basin due to the imposed discharge or the determined salt-water in the western section of th...
Multi-Foulant-Resistant Material Design by Matching Coating-Fluid Optical Properties
Toparlı, Çiğdem; Dinh, Minh A.; Yildiz, Bilge; Short, Michael P. (2020-05-01)
The buildup of corrosion deposits, known as fouling, seriously hinders large-scale energy production. From nuclear power plants to geothermal reservoirs, fouling increases system pressure drops, impedes heat transfer, and accelerates corrosion, leading to derating and early failure. Here, we investigate the collodial interactions between multiple foulants and coated surfaces, with the aim of discovering principles for minimizing the adhesion of foulants to them. We hypothesize that matching the full refract...
