Landslides are one of the most destructive natural hazards in Turkey. There are several contributing factors that cause landslides such as geological and morphological characteristics, precipitation processes, groundwater level fluctuations, daily temperature changes, snow melt and seismic effects. The purpose of this study is to develop an in-situ monitoring and early warning system by using optical fibers in order to evaluate the effect of contributing factors on the deformation characteristics and to decrease the risk caused from landslides. During this study, a system that is composed of fiber optic cables and a device that sends laser signals and collects backscattered light; referred to as BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analyzer) has been used. This system has a 1 m spatial resolution and it can detect strain with a 0.1με resolution along a 3 km cable. The system has been succesfully implemented for relating the strain on the cable with displacement due to its high sensitivity and continuous data gathering properties. For that purpose, the real case practice of the system has been implemented in a landslide area in Kocaeli. The deformation characteristics of the data gathered in the landslide region by fiber optic system have been processed along with the precipitation parameters. Moreover, the studies regarding the influence of other parameters such as seismic activity and groundwater level on the landslide movement are in progress. This study reveals that the optical fiber system already used as a monitoring system is also capable of detecting deformations and could be used as an early warning system in landslide prone regions.

Flood risk mapping using economic, environmental and sociadimensions
Yeğin, Murat; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Flood is one of the most destructive natural hazards in Turkey. It is unavoidable but its impacts can be minimized by taking necessary precautions. Flood risk mapping is a developing concept and it is used to determine economically, environmentally and socially risky areas. European Council stipulated the member countries to prepare flood hazard maps showing extents of low, medium and high probability flood events. These maps should also be prepared for Turkey during the European Union harmonization process...
Yağmurla Tetiklenen Heyelanların Önceden Tahmini: Bir Laboratuvar Model Çalışması
Ahmadi-adli, Mohammad; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan; Toker, Nabi Kartal (null; 2015-11-26)
Rainfall triggered landslides are common natural hazards with significant consequences all over the world, including Turkey. Available methods for predicting rainfall-induced slope instability are based on regional statistical data of past slope failures and rainfall records rather than a physically-based model that takes the mechanism of the problem into account. Current study aims to predict rainfall triggered landslides in a laboratory model study, by obtaining rainfall intensity-duration (I-D) threshold...
Shallow landslides triggered by rainfall in nsaturated soils
Ahmadi-Adli, Mohammad; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan; Toker, Nabi Kartal; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Rainfall triggered landslides are common natural hazards with significant consequences all over the world, including Turkey. Majority of available methods for predicting rainfall-induced slope instability are based on regional statistical data of past slope failures and rainfall records rather than a physically-based model that takes the mechanism of the problem into account. Current study aims to define a numerical model for typical slopes in the region (Northern Turkey), use unsaturated soil properties an...
Comparison of mean site-specific response spectra in Turkey with the design spectra of AASHTO
Mestav Sarıca, Gizem; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Seismic design of bridges is a significant problem for all seismically-active countries including Turkey which has gone through recent destructive earthquakes. Bridges are important elements of transportation and their robustness is important in the aftermath of major earthquakes. Turkish engineers currently employ a modified version of AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) LFD Design Specifications for bridge design. Within the scope of a national project (TÜBİTAK 110G...
Seismic microzonation of Erbaa (Tokat-Turkey) loccated along eastern segment of The North Anatolian Fault Zone (nafz)
Akın, Müge; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
Turkey is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. The study area, Erbaa, is located in a seismically active fault zone known as North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). Erbaa is one of the towns of Tokat located in the Middle Black Sea Region. According to the Earthquake zoning map of Turkey, the study area is in the First Degree Earthquake Zone. The city center of Erbaa (Tokat) was previously settled on the left embankment of Kelkit River. After the disastrous 1942 Niksar-Erbaa earthquake (Mw = ...
