Eastern Mediterranean is known as the most nutrient impoverished basins among the world seas. However, river inputs, atmospheric loads, winter convectional mixing, summer upwelling and the degree of exchange of coastal waters with offshore ones, all, contribute in spatial and temporal heterogeneity in receiving surface waters in the northeastern part of the eastern Mediterranean. This study is conducted to understand similarities in surface waters (inshore (low salinity-high nutrient), transition and offshore waters (high salinity-low nutrient)) based on their dissolved nutrient (PO4, NO2+ NO3, Si) contents and their physical (temperature, salinity, density) properties. For this purpose, data collected during 8 basin wide seasonal cruises (November 2005 to September 2007) at 78 different stations are examined using cluster analysis in northeastern Mediterranean. Results have shown 3:3:4 cluster groups based on their nutrient contents, physical properties and both, respectively. River inputs all concentrated in a certain region and the nature of the prevailing surface currents in the area seemed to determine such surface waters. Except river discharge area and some transition surface waters, the northeastern part of the eastern Mediterranean showed completely oligotrophic properties (low nutrient-high salinity). The transition waters with limited territoriality had two-sided (between inshore and offshore waters) interaction in the area

Determination of limited nutrients in the Turkish coastal waters of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas
Tüfekçi, V; Kuzkaya, E; Tüfekçi, H; Avaz, G; Tuğrul, Süleyman (2013-01-01)
Increased human activities, rapid and uncontrolled industrial development, intensive urbanization have polluted and hence drastically modified the Turkish coastal water ecosystem of North East (NE) Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Assessments of nutrient budgets and limiting nutrients in aquatic systems are of wide interest because of their fundamental importance in understanding carbon fixation, coastal eutrophication and wastewater management. In this study, the relative importance of nitrogen and phosphoru...
Evolution of the Neotethyan branches in the Eastern Mediterranean Petrology and ages of oceanic basalts
Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Sayıt, Kaan; Uzunçimen Keçeli, Seda (null; 2015-10-27)
The Anatolian Peninsula in the Eastern Mediterranean includes remnants of the Proto-, Paleo-, Neo- and Para-Tethys oceans. From these, the Neotethys with its various branches has been studied relatively well. Disregarding the embayments of the major oceanic strands, three main oceanic branches are distinguished by the presence of ophiolitic suture belts, separating terranes of continental crust origin (Fig. 1). From S to N these are the Southern branch of Neotethys, the ...
Characterization and Comparison of Turkish Table Olive Varieties With NMR Relaxometry and Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Kilercioğlu, Mete; Özel, Barış; Öztop, Halil Mecit (2016-01-01)
Olive is one of the fruits that is mostly consumed in the Mediterranean region. Depending on the variety, oil quality of the olive changes significantly. In this study, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Relaxometry and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) experiments were used to characterize different Turkish table olive varieties, (Ayvalik, Mega, Sele, Light) in terms of tissue structure, fat and water contents. Moisture and fat content were measured using an infrared moisture analyzer and soxhlet extraction,...
Major Bottom Water Ventilation Events Do Not Significantly Reduce Basin-Wide Benthic N and P Release in the Eastern Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea)
SOMMER, Stefan; CLEMENS, David; Yücel, Mustafa; PFANNKUCHE, Olaf; Hall, Per O. J.; ALMROTH-ROSELL, Elin; Schulz-Vogt, Heide N.; Dale, Andrew W. (2017-01-01)
Redox-sensitive mobilization of nutrients from sediments strongly affects the eutrophic state of the central Baltic Sea; a region associated with the spread of hypoxia and almost permanently anoxic and sulfidic conditions in the deeper basins. Ventilation of these basins depends on renewal by inflow of water enriched in oxygen (O-2) from the North Sea, occurring roughly once per decade. Benthic fluxes and water column distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species, phosphate (PO43-), dissolved inorga...
The effect of cold and warm core eddies on the distribution and stoichiometry of dissolved nutrients in the northeastern Mediterranean
Yılmaz, Ayşen (1998-10-01)
The nutrient distribution and phytoplankton production in the Levantine Sea of the eastern Mediterranean are principally determined by the duration and the intensity of deep winter mixing in the quasi-permanent anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. In the seasons of stratification, a nutrient-poor aphotic layer is formed between the euphotic zone and the nutricline; interestingly, it consistently extends down to depths of about 29.0-29.05 isopycnal surfaces, but nearly vanishes in the core of the cyclonic Rhode...
