Nannoconids have been recorded in a rock-forming quantity in the uppermost Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous rock units in Northwest Anatolia, Turkey. Samples were collected from seventeen stratigraphic sections spanning the calciturbidities of the Yosunlukbayırı Formation and pelagic micrites of the Soğukçam Limestone. Because of rareness and difficulties for extracting of calcareous nannofossil species particularly zone markers in these type lithologies, nannoconids have particular attention in terms of biostratigraphy. Twenty nine species of nannoconids were recorded in the studied samples. Their taxonomy were revised and their stratigraphic ranges were given. The classification of genus Nannoconus is based on the gross morphology of the test, presence of central cavity or central canal, proportion of central cavity to thickness of the wall, proportion of height to width. Thickness of calcite elements, degree of horizontal intercept angle, type of apertures and degree of horizontal intercept angle, type of apertures, and degree of angle of apertural elements are also used for description of the species. Fluctuations in nannoconid abundance are related to lithological changes. High abundance of nannoconids in limestones indicates clear surface water palaeoenvironments without terrigenous influx. From the stratigraphical point of view, their importance was clarified by their high abundance peaks. Problematic zonal boundaries of the nannofossil zonation could be determined by major nannoconid bioevents.

Rock mass characterization and primary support design for the Boztepe Tunnel, Turkey
Sopaci, E.; Akgün, Haluk; Akinci, M. (Taylor & Francis Group -CRC Press; 2005-12-01)
The Ordu province in local scale and northeastern Turkey in regional scale comprise of volcanic arc related rock masses. These modes of origin accommodate both volcanic and flysch type rock masses that have transitions so often with each other. The Boztepe tunnel will mostly be driven through this type of lithol-ogy. In order to assess the rock masses surrounding the tunnel from a geotechnical point of view; surface, subsurface and laboratory investigations have been implemented. Internationally accepted ro...
GEOLOGY AND CHEMICAL VARIATIONS IN TOURMALINE FROM THE QUARTZ-TOURMALINE BRECCIAS WITHIN THE KERKENEZ GRANITE-MONZONITE MASSIF, CENTRAL ANATOLIAN CRYSTALLINE COMPLEX, TURKEY
Demirel, Serhat; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Topuz, Gueltekin; IŞIK, VEYSEL (2009-08-01)
A hydrothermal breccia zone 6 km long and 2 km wide, crossed by quartz-tourmaline veins, occurs to the south of the Late Cretaceous Kerkenez granite-monzonite massif in the northern part of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Yozgat, Turkey. This breccia zone is characterized by numerous veins, a few millimeters to 1 meter in width, and display typical microtectonic features of multiple brecciation. Trace amounts of albite, K-feldspar, epidote, muscovite and rutile are associated with quartz and tour...
Sedimentological and Geochemical Records of Lower Cretaceous Carbonate Successions Around Trabzon (NE Turkey): Implications for Paleoenvironmental Evolution and Paleoclimatological Conditions of Tethys
ÖZYURT, MERVE; KIRMACI, MEHMET ZİYA; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; KANDEMİR, RAİF (2019-01-18)
Upper Jurassic–lower Cretaceous carbonates (Berdiga Fm.) are widely exposed in the NE Turkey. An integrated study of sedimentological and geochemical analysis was carried out on the lower Cretaceous carbonates of Berdiga Fm. in Trabzon area in order to reveal the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatological conditions of northern Tethyan Ocean. Three microfacies types were identified corresponding to inner to slope environments. Inner platform environment developed during the Hauterivian–Aptian interval. End ...
Sedimentary cyclicity in the upper cretaceous successions of the Haymana Basin (Turkey): depositional sequences as response to relative sea level changes
Huseynov, Afgan; Altıner, Demir; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
The Haymana basin in Central Anatolia (Turkey) formed on a Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene fore arc accretionary wedge. The aim of this study is to investigate the sedimentary cyclicity and depositional sequences in the Upper Cretaceous clastic successions of the Haymana basin. To be able to achieve this objective, a 250 m stratigraphic section, which is mainly composed of siliciclastics has been measured in the Haymana Basin. In this study, detailed lithofacies analyses were performed and five different ...
Use of sedimentary structures in the recognition of sequence boundaries in Upper Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous peritidal carbonates of the Western Taurides, Turkey
Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Altıner, Demir (Informa UK Limited, 2001-08-01)
Subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal carbonate facies are recognized in the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian)-Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) peritidal carbonates of the Fele area (Western Taurides, Turkey). Vertical stacking patterns of these facies are of a cyclical character, shallowing upward is the trend of the cyclicity in these carbonate facies. In-situ karstic breccias, collapse breccias, caliche (laminar calcrete), "Microcodium" accretion, and root casts are structures commonly indicative of third-order ...
