Cooling systems are used in houses, cars, hospitals, defence systems and many other such areas. However, the gases (chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons) present in today's refrigerant systems are harmful to the environment and cause global warming. Moreover, today's cooling technology is expensive and low-efficiency technology. Therefore, new and cost-effective with higher energy efficiencies cooling systems have begun to be developed to eliminate the use of these harmful gases. Among them, magnetic refrigeration has attracted increasing interest in the materials research communities because of its higher cooling efficiency and environmentally friendliness. Full Heusler alloys are magnetic ternary intermetallic compounds with the L21-type crystal structure. Typically, these alloys undergo a low temperature martensitic transformation (austenite↔martensite), a magnetic transformation (ferromagnetic↔paramagnetic) and relatively high temperature atomic ordering (order↔order and order↔disorder) transformations. After the discovery of the ferromagnetic shape memory (FSM) and giant magnetocaloric effects (GMCE) in Ni-Mn-Ga alloy, Ni-Mn based Heusler alloys have received considerable attention due to their unique magnetic and structural properties. The presentation will be an overview of the main research thrusts at the “Novel Alloys Design and Development Lab” (NOVALAB) of MetE-METU in the designing and development of advanced metallic materials for magnetic refrigeration applications.

Evaluation of photovoltaic systems for voltage quality
Şengül, Deniz; Göl, Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2018)
Because of the governmental incentives and developing photovoltaic technology, the distributed photovoltaic systems are populating rapidly in power systems. This rapid population brings with concerns about voltage quality of the power systems. This thesis aims to evaluate the effects of those plants to the voltage quality of power systems in terms of voltage regulation and flicker. The thesis develops a statistical analysis method by developing metrics for a photovoltaic power plant located in Ankara, using...
Modeling the effect of dose rate and time on crosslinking and scission in irradiated polyethylene
Sargın, Irmak; Beckman, S. P. (2020-06-01)
The insulation around the electrical cabling in nuclear power plants is frequently made of ethylene-propylene rubber and crosslinked polyethylene that is subjected to low levels of environmental stressors and radiation over the duration of their decades long service life. For the purpose of maintenance and reactor recertification, it is necessary to develop a non-destructive approach to determine the degree of damage the insulation has sustained. Accelerated aging experiments are used to develop these metho...
Evaluation of a Tunnel Form Social Housing Unit Based on Passive Design Principles
Yılmaz, Deniz Derya; Tanyer, Ali Murat (null; 2015-05-28)
Many countries developed methods for the definition of houses with a very low energy use in the past years, among which Passive House represents a dwelling with extremely thermal insulated external envelope, good air tightness and highly efficient ventilation heat recovery to reduce energy consumption of buildings greatly depending on the location. This paper is carried out to see if it is possible to design tunnel-form structures as Passive House buildings. Also in this paper, construction of a Passive Hou...
Implementation and evaluation of the dynamic distributed real time industrial protocol (D²RIP)
Kaya, Adem; Eyüboğlu, Behçet Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2013)
The contemporary large-scale and complex industrial control systems such as manufacturing systems, power plants or chemical processes are realized as distributed systems. Since different controller nodes are usually physically distributed, their coordination and information exchange is commonly realized via industrial communication networks (ICNs). In the last decade, there is an ongoing research effort in both academic and industrial fields to employ Ethernet for industrial communications due to its wide a...
