Synchro-phasor based three phase state estimation using modal components

2013-02-21
Power systems may not always operate under fully balanced conditions due to unbalanced loads. Such cases will necessitate full three-phase monitoring of the system state. Thus, positive sequence network model and associated state estimation formulation will not be valid for such operating conditions. It is clearly possible to use a simple extension of the least squares (WLS) estimator to formulate a full three-phase state estimation problem. However, this may require significant changes to existing state estimator software and will greatly increase the computational burden compared to the positive sequence counterpart. This paper proposes a simple alternative that uses modal transformation and synchronized measurements provided by phasor measurement units (PMU). Both state estimation and subsequent bad data processing will be accomplished using the proposed modal component based approach. Details of the method along with examples will be given to illustrate its effectiveness.

A Robust PMU Based Three-Phase State Estimator Using Modal Decoupling
Göl, Murat (2014-09-01)
Power systems do not always operate under fully balanced conditions because of unbalanced loads and untransposed transmission lines. Under such conditions, commonly used positive sequence equivalent will no longer be valid. On the other hand, use of full three-phase model will add significant computational burden for the considered application. This paper describes a simple approach to address this issue for the specific application of state estimation. The main idea is to exploit the linearity of the estim...
Frequency Domain Optimization of Dry Friction Dampers on Buildings Under Harmonic Excitation
Erişen, Z Eren; Ciğeroğlu, Ender (null; 2012-01-30)
Friction mechanism has an extensive usage in many different fields for energy dissipation. It is also used at buildings to reduce the displacement that is caused by ground acceleration during an earthquake. Despite friction damper is a simple device to use on structures, due to its nonlinear characteristic, analysis and design of a structure equipped with a friction damper is difficult. In this paper, Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) is employed to represent the frictional contact as a nonlinear complex stiffn...
Line Composite Insulators Condition Monitoring through Partial Discharge Measurement
Abedini-Livari, Ali; Eshaghi-Maskouni, Mandi; Vakilian, Mehdi; Anşin, Berfin (2019-01-01)
Due to outstanding advantages of polymeric insulators such as: hydrophobicity, impact resistance and lower weight, their application in the high voltage transmission and distribution lines is increased significantly, in recent years. The most important feature of these insulators is their hydrophobicity. Contamination and aging are some of the factors that weaken this important feature and reduce the reliability of these insulators. Due to aging effects partial discharges start on the surface of the composi...
Cooling performance investigation of a two-pass rib-roughened channel
Kavas, İsa; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Yasa, Tolga; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
The performance of the modern aero-engines is highly dependent on the turbine inlet gas temperature. The higher temperature leads to more compact and efficient machines. Additionally, specific fuel consumption of the engine is decreased for the same thrust rating. However, the turbine inlet temperatures of the today’s engines are already beyond the material structural limits. Hence, the turbine section must be cooled down to acceptable levels. Various types of cooling methods are typically applied to the ga...
