Bu çalışmanın amacı Julian Barnes’ın Zamanın Gürültüsü (The Noise of Time)adlı romanını Brian Massumi’nin korkuyu duygulanımsal bir gerçeklik olarak kavramsallaştırdığı afekt kuramı çerçevesinden incelemektir. Massumi’ye göre korku tehditkar geleceğin bugün hissedilen gerçekliğidir. Bir başka deyişle, korku, bugün olaylar düzeyinde bir gerçekliği olmayan şeyin his yoluyla bir varlık kazanmasıdır. Her bir duygulanımın politik bir boyut taşıdığının altını çizen Massumi, “The Future Birth of Affective Fact” adlı makalesinde gelecekte başa gelebilecek olana karşı bugün duyulan korkunun iktidar sahiplerinin elinde bugünü kontrol etmenin bir aracına dönüşmesini tartışır. Barnes’ın Stalin dönemi Sovyet Rusyası’nda hayat sürmüş olan Shostakovich’in yaşamını konu ettiği romanı Zamanın Gürültüsü, bestecinin “korkmuş bir adam” (“a frightened man”) olarak portresini çizerken tam da bu meseleyi görünür kılar. Shostakovich’in gerçekliğini şekillendiren şey olaylardan ziyade duygulanımlar ve bunlardan en ön planda olanı da korkudur.
