Nondestructive monitoring of the variations in microstructure and residual stress in carburized steels
Hızlı, Hüseyin; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2016)
Service life and performance of the case-hardened machine parts are greatly dependent on the residual stress state in the surface layers which directly affects the fatigue behavior. Recently, all industrial sectors have been requested for a fast and non-destructive determination of residual stress. This study aims to monitor the variations in surface residual stress distributions in the carburized 19CrNi5H steels by means of non-destructive and semi-destructive measurement techniques, Magnetic Barkhausen No...
NONDESTRUCTIVE MONITORING OF VARIATIONS OF RESIDUAL STRESSES IN STEEL WELDMENTS BY MAGNETIC BARKHAUSEN NOISE METHOD
Gür, Cemil Hakan; Batıgün, Caner; Çam, İbrahim (2013-07-18)
Variations of surface residual stresses as a function of weld runs in API 5L X70 steel plates were non-destructively monitored by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method. After each weld run, MBN signal and hardness distributions were recorded. MBN signals were converted into stress values by using a specific calibration procedure. The results were analyzed by considering microstructure investigations and hardness measurements, and then, they were compared with the results of X-ray diffraction measurements. ...
Nondestructive Evaluation of Additively Manufactured Metallic Components
Gür, Cemil Hakan (2020-09-30)
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are successfully used for detection of surface and internal flaws, and also for characterization of materials. Additive manufacturing (AM) of metallic components is rather complicated due to many process variables affecting the performance and quality of the final product. Qualification, verification, and industry adoption of AM parts is dependent upon the capability of NDE. This paper presents the initial results of the on-going studies about NDE of additively ...
Nondestructive Monitoring of Pearlite Degradation in Medium Carbon Steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Method
Gür, Cemil Hakan (2017-09-06)
Cementite in steel microstructures exits in various forms such as lamellae in pearlite after normalizing, or nano-size particles in ferrite matrix after quenching-tempering, or large spheroidal particles in ferrite matrix after spheroidizing heat treatment. Any alteration in the cementite morphology influences the strength and hardness of pearlite that exists in most of the steel structures used in wide range of industrial applications. For instance, spheroidizing heat treatment is intentionally applied to ...
Nondestructive investigation of the effect of quenching and tempering on medium-carbon low alloy steels
Gür, Cemil Hakan (2005-01-01)
The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of quenching and tempering on sound velocity of steels, and to contribute to the nondestructive control and optimisation of the quenching/tempering systems. Disk-shaped specimens were prepared from AISI/SAE 4140 and AISI/SAE 5140 steel bars. All specimens were austenised and quenched identically to eliminate the effect of grain size on sound velocity, and a constant tempering time was chosen. Microstructures of the samples were characterised by metallographi...
