Cold water formed on the western continental shelf of the Black Sea in February 1990 was studied. The band of cold water follows the coast and interacts with coastal geometry, resulting in winter phytoplankton blooms particularly along the southwestern coast. Species composition and surface spatial distribution of net phytoplankton (> 55 mu m) showed an apparent species differentiation between the shelf and open ocean plankton. Offshore waters exhibit high diversity indices compared to shelf waters where the intense outburst induced by Chaetoceros sp. occurs. This species of diatom thrived successfully in the cold waters, reaching cell densities > 10(6) cells/l in the vicinity of Sakarya river and its eastward extension. Six different-sized patchy aggregates were determined along the coast by using multivariate analysis (cluster and Multi-Dimensional Scaling, MDS) technique.

Population structure, vertical distribution and diel migration of Sagitta setosa (Chaetognatha) in the south-western part of the Black Sea
Besiktepe, S; Unsal, M (2000-04-01)
The population structure of Sagitta serosa from the south-western part of the Black Sea was examined between May 1994 and December 1996. In addition, the vertical distribution and diel vertical migration of S.setosa were studied for juveniles (less than or equal to 5 mm) and adults (>5 mm) in April 1995, September 1995 and June 1996. The population structure studies showed that a new generation was introduced in September. Breeding was most intensive from June to November, indicated by the frequency of smal...
THE EVOLUTION OF MEDITERRANEAN WATER IN THE BLACK-SEA - INTERIOR MIXING AND MATERIAL TRANSPORT BY DOUBLE-DIFFUSIVE INTRUSIONS
OZSOY, E; UNLUATA, U; TOP, Z (1993-01-01)
After its entry into the Black Sea from the Bosphorus Strait, Mediterranean Water first evolves by mixing with the Cold Intermediate Water on the shelf region, and later sinks along the continental slope, reaching the halocline in the form of cold anomalies. The intrusion of the modified waters drives a series of intermediate depth nepheloid layers spreading from the southwestern margin into the interior of the Black Sea basin. In many cases, the temperature, salinity, suspended matter and other properties ...
Distribution of tin in the northeastern Mediterranean
Yemeni̇ci̇ğlu, Semal; Saydam, Cemal; Sali̇hoğlu, İlkay (Elsevier BV, 1987)
Concentrations of tin, one of the naturally methylated elements, was determined in sea water, sediments and organisms, collected from the Northeastern Mediterranean. A hydride generation technique was employed, in which the tin and methyltin, were converted to their hydrides. The hydrides produced were detected by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. On the average, the inorganic tin content of sea water samples ranged between 1.1–236 ng/1. Although the dominant methyltin species was dimethyltin, all forms ...
Seasonality of zooplankton in the Southern Black Sea and genetics of Calanus Euxinus (Copepoda)
Ünal, Ebru; Kıdeyş, Ahmet; Graduate School of Marine Sciences (2002)
Seasonality and composition of zooplankton was comparatively studied at two stations (inshore and offshore) off Sinop, in southern Black Sea in 1999. Intra-specific genetic differentiation of the copepod Calanus euxinus dwelling in different layers along the water column was also investigated in samples obtained from different regions of the southern Black Sea in September 2000. A total of 64 zooplankton species were identified in the Sinop region in 1999, most of which being meroplankton. Out of these, 17 ...
Satellite-detected early summer coccolithophore blooms and their interannual variability in the Black Sea
Cokacar, T; Oguz, T; Kubilay, N (Elsevier BV, 2004-08-01)
Interannual variability of the prevalent early summer coccolithophore blooms within surface waters of the Black Sea was studied by means of satellite-based bio-optical observations. Two coccolith detection algorithms, tested for the Black Sea conditions, were found to provide comparable spatial coccolith patterns consistent with the corresponding true color images. Reliability of the algorithms is also supported by several sets of time-series measurements in different parts of the basin. An analysis of 6 ye...
