Wind energy has become an important field of study recently, especially in the countries having high potential of wind energy production such as Turkey. Among these studies, forecasting wind power production and choosing a bid for each power plant have an important place. In the scope of the project, firstly by applying a new clustering approach and then Local Quantile Regression to the data, interval forecasts are generated. This forecasting approach gives successful results when tested for power plants enrolled in Wind Power Monitoring and Forecasting Center. At the next stage, a method is proposed for forecasting electricity prices. At the last stage, a stochastic model is built to optimize the bidding strategies. This mixed-integer model takes production forecasts and electricity price scenarios as input and gives the optimal bid as output. The overall approach proposed in this study provides a considerable improvement in revenues when compared to the previous approaches.

Stochastic modelling of wind energy generation
Alişar, İbrahim; Sevaioğlu, Osman; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
In this thesis work, electricty generation modeling of the wind energy -one type of the renewable energy sources- is studied. The wind energy characteristics and the distribution of wind speed in a specific region is also examined. In addition, the power curves of the wind turbines are introduced and the relationship between the wind speed and wind power is explained. The generation characteristics of the wind turbines from various types of producers are also investigated. In this study, the main wind power...
Rethinking wind energy in its social context: conflicting perspectives and planning problems – the Karaburun experience
Özçam, Zeynep; Pınarcıoğlu, Mehmet Melih; Department of City and Regional Planning (2016)
As a result of global concerns about energy related environmental problems, the use of renewable energy resources has gained great importance. The renewables are widely recognized as an effective tool for limiting energy related emissions and a fundamental component of sustainable development. Among these, especially wind energy has considerable involvement. Due to this, major national policies intend to support wind energy and wind energy installations have also started to grow with an expanding rate. Like...
Data mining-based power generation forecast at wind power plants
Özkan, Mehmet Barış; Karagöz, Pınar; Department of Computer Engineering (2014)
As a result of rapid depletion of non-renewable energy resources, the importance of the e efficient utilization of renewable energy sources has increased all over the world and in our country in recent years. Wind has an important role in renewable energy sources with its high potential. However, compared to other renewable energy sources, wind has a spatial and temporal discontinuity characteristic so there is a need for estimating and planning of wind power generation. Wind Power Plants (WPPs) inform thei...
Numerical simulations of wind turbine wake interactions using actuator line and les models
Önel, Hüseyin Can; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2019)
Wind is one of the most promising renewable energy resources of the future. After years of optimization studies, Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines shine out as the most efficient type and have been the only model used in large scale commercial wind farms. Layout planning plays an important role in getting the most power out of a wind farm as much as turbine blade design. Most important parameter in this planning phase is the inevitable wake generated by rotors and its impact on other wind turbines which results...
Ice accretion prediction on wind turbine blades and aerodynamic shape optimization for minimizing power production losses
Yırtıcı, Özcan; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
The global wind energy resources are plentiful in cold climate regions and mountainous areas, which cause ice formation on wind turbine blades. Prediction of ice accretion on wind turbine blades makes it possible to estimate the power losses due to icing. Ice accretion on wind turbine blades is responsible for significant increases in aerodynamic drag and decreases in aerodynamic lift, and may even cause premature flow separation. All these events create power losses and the amount of power loss depends on ...
