Linewidth narrowing and luminescence enhancement in photonic crystal cavities and plasmonic gratings on an Er-doped silicon nitride platform
Gong, Yiyang; Makarova, Maria; Yerci, Selçuk; Li, Rui; Stevens, Marty; Baek, Burm; Nam, Sae Woo; Dal Negro, Luca; Vučković, Jelena (2010-05-07)
Light emission at 1.54 mu m from an Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer coupled to photonic crystal resonators and plamonic arrays is studied. We observe the cavity resonances at cryogenic and room temperatures and under varying optical pump powers. The results demonstrate that small mode volume, high quality factor resonators enhance Er absorption rates dramatically at the cavity resonance. Photonic crystal cavity resonances exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power at cryogenic temperatures, signif...
Investigation of gmpls applications in optical systems
Göken, Burcu; Ergül, Rüyal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
In this study, possible applications of label switching in large area, fully optical networks are investigated. The objective was to design a label assignment method by using Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) concept to get an efficient optical network operation. In order to fulfill this objective, two new approaches were proposed: a label assignment method and a concatenated label structure. Label assignment method was designed to provide an efficient utilization of resources. Concatenated...
Non-linear optical properties of two dimensional quantum well structures
Ağanoğlu, Ruzin; Tomak, Mehmet; Department of Physics (2006)
In this work optical properties of two dimensional quantum well structures are studied. Variational calculation of the eigenstates in an isolated quantum well structure with and without the external electrical field is presented. At weak fields a quadratic Stark shift is found whose magnitude depends strongly on the finite well depth. It is observed that under external electrical field, the asymmetries due to lack of inversion symmetry leads to higher order nonlinear optical effects such as second order opt...
Nonlinear image restoration
Ungan, Cahit Uğur; Demirbaş, Kerim; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
This thesis analyzes the process of deblurring of degraded images generated by space-variant nonlinear image systems with Gaussian observation noise. The restoration of blurred images is performed by using two methods; a modified version of the Optimum Decoding Based Smoothing Algorithm and the Bootstrap Filter Algorithm which is a version of Particle Filtering methods. A computer software called MATLAB is used for performing the simulations of image estimation. The results of some simulations for various o...
Spectroscopic measurements of electron temperature and electron density in electron beam plasma generator based on collisional radiative model
Goktas, H.; Demir, A.; Kacar, E.; Hegazy, H.; Turan, Raşit; Oke, G.; Seyhan, A. (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
The current work describes a spectroscopic method for determining the electron temperature and electron density in an electron beam generator using argon spectral lines based on a collisional radiative model. Neutral and first-ionized Ar lines emitted from the electron beam generator are studied experimentally. A collisional radiative code was developed to simulate the Ar (I) and Ar (II) spectral emission and to compare the results with the experimental data for electron density and temperature determinatio...
