Synthetic sludge: A physical/chemical model in understanding bioflocculation
Sanin, Faika Dilek (1996-07-01)
We postulate a mechanism for flee formation and demonstrate its feasibility by building synthetic sludge flocs. In this work, polystyrene latex particles of a size similar to bacteria are used to simulate individual bacteria; alginate, a polysaccharide, is used to simulate microbial extracellular polymers; and calcium ions are used as the bridging cations. Calcium and alginate are added at typical concentration ranges relative to the amount of microorganisms existing iii wastewater treatment biological slud...
Synthetic Lubricants Derived from Plastic Waste and their Tribological Performance
Hackler, Ryan A.; Vyavhare, Kimaya; Kennedy, Robert M.; Çelik, Gökhan; Kanbur, Uddhav; Griffin, Philip J.; Sadow, Aaron D.; Zang, Guiyan; Elgowainy, Amgad; Sun, Pingping; Poeppelmeier, Kenneth R.; Erdemir, Ali; Delferro, Massimiliano (2021-01-01)
© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbHThe energy efficiency, mechanical durability, and environmental compatibility of all moving machine components rely heavily on advanced lubricants for smooth and safe operation. Herein an alternative family of high-quality liquid (HQL) lubricants was derived by the catalytic conversion of pre- and post-consumer polyolefin waste. The plastic-derived lubricants performed comparably to synthetic base oils such as polyalphaolefins (PAOs), both with a wear scar volume (WSV) of 7.5×10−5 mm−3....

Artificial-neural-network prediction of hexagonal lattice parameters for non-stoichiometric apatites
Kockan, Umit; Ozturk, Fahrettin; Evis, Zafer (2014-01-01)
In this study, hexagonal lattice parameters (a and c) and unit-cell volumes of non-stoichiometric apatites of M-10(TO4)(6)X-2 are predicted from their ionic radii with artificial neural networks. A multilayer-perceptron network is used for training. The results indicate that the Bayesian regularization method with four neurons in the hidden layer with a tansig activation function and one neuron in the output layer with a purelin function gives the best results. It is found that the errors for the predicted ...
