The aim of this paper is to investigate if metacognitively embedded prompts help to create a metacognitively oriented learning environment in a science laboratory course. The data were collected from 28 Pre service science teachers (PSTs) who attended the science laboratory course in a large public university. Mixed research method approach was used to collect and analyze the data. To collect in dept data, interviews with 7 PSTs were made. Metacognitive prompts were used throughout the laboratory course which lasted 6 weeks to evoke PSTs’ metacognition. Metacognitively learning environment was investigated in terms of 1) metacognitive demands, 2) student-student discourse, 3) student-teacher discourse, 4) student voice 5) distributed control 6) teacher encouragement and support 7) emotional support. It can be concluded from the study that metacognitively embedded prompts enable to create a metacognitively oriented classroom environment which supports the metacognitive development. Besides, PSTs stated that they questioned their learning more with the laboratory course. Furthermore, the interviews supported that this course helped PSTs develop their metacognitive skills.

ŞENGEL, ERHAN; Özden, Muhammet Yaşar (2010-01-01)
This exploratory case study provides a quantitative report on the integration of a specific online information system into the science curriculum using authentic tasks in a class setting. It aims to investigate the effects of a Web-based learning tool in a science course on students' achievement and attitudes toward science learning. The subjects are 21 seventh grade students. The Science Achievement Test (SAT) and attitude scales for science learning were applied as pre-tests and post-tests. Students' tota...
A Study of the Prediction of Academic Achievement in the Chemistry Course
Yuksel, Mehmet; Geban, Ömer (2014-04-01)
The present research examines chemistry course achievement in relation to the academic self-concept, attitudes towards the chemistry course and logical thinking skills. The study sample consisted of 252 students in a vocational high school in Ankara who voluntarily participated with convenience sampling method. In the research, the academic self-concept and logical thinking were found be significant predictors on academic achievement. As a result of discriminant analysis, the academic self-concept and logic...

THE THESIS STUDY AIMS TO UNDERSTAND AND INVESTIGATE THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS BY UTILIZING THE CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPES OF ANOTHER FIELD, GAME. THE STEPS TAKEN IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS AIM ARE 'ANALYZING GAME, ITS PROPERTIES, AND TYPES', 'RE-READING AND UNDERSTANDING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS BY INVESTIGATING THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES WITH GAME TYPES IN ORDER TO END UP WITH INFORMATIVE, UNDERSTANDABLE TABULAR RESULTS', RESPECTIVELY.
An investigation of undergraduate students’ scientific inquiry processes in a physics laboratory
Ünal, Cezmi; Özdemir, Ömer Faruk; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The aim of this study is to investigate undergraduate students’ scientific inquiry processes in a physics laboratory designed using problem-based learning. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was employed for this aim. Sixteen undergraduate students were participated in this study. Participants conducted inquiry activities for five weeks. The data sources were the observations of participants while they were doing inquiry activities and the laboratory work sheets filled by the participants....
An Interactive computational design approach for creating architectural topographiesi
Ongun, Gökhan; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2013)
The research aims at developing a digital environment for understanding and analyzing natural forces and designing according to the simultaneous feedback given by omputational tools. The thesis is an investigation into the concept of interactivity between the designer and computer through the use of computational fluid dynamic tools in a local context of Eastern Netherlands Coast, in response to the already dynamic natural fluid like elements such as air, coastal currents and sand particles. The behavior of...
