This study is a case study within a three-year-long design research study. The purposes of this study are twofold. The first purpose includes investigating whether there is a significant difference in seventh-grade students' proportional reasoning skills before and after a teaching experiment conducted in line with the perspectives of Hypothetical Learning Trajectories and the theory of Realistic Mathematics Education and assess retention of those skills by means of quantitative analysis. The second purpose...

Risk mitigation in urban regions starts with identification of potential seismic losses in future earthquakes. Estimation of seismic losses concerns a wide range of authorities varying from geophysical and earthquake engineers, physical and economic planners to insurance companies while the process naturally involves inputs from multiple disciplines. In this study, we present a city-level model where potential seismic losses are expressed in terms of regional seismic hazard, local soil conditions and local ...

From scriptual to spatial : "labeling" as a metaphore to understand museum space
Erkaya, Gizem; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2008)
This thesis is a critical inquiry of the relationship between the architectural aspects of the museum space and the collection on display, regarding to the concept of flexibility. Inside the museum, displayed object can be thought as a two folded representation which can be termed as labeling. Museum space can be thought as the juxtaposed condition of these two bodies of the object. The flexible spatial organization of the museum space is accepted to support the ephemeral character of labeling. Within this ...
