Life cycle and cost performance analysis on ship structural maintenance strategy of a short route hybrid ferry
Wang, Haibin; Oğuz, Elif; Jeong, Byongug; Zhou, Peilin (null; 2018-05-09)
This paper presents the importance of coating maintenance and suggests an optimal strategy from economic and environmental points of view. Life cycle analysis is introduced to estimate the economy and environment impacts so particular decision can be made. A case study of a hybrid ferry is carried out where cash, energy and emission flows are tracked and evaluated. With different maintenance intervals, the consumptions of energy, materials and fuels are evaluated to estimate their cost benefits. Emissions n...
Life cycle cost and environmental impact analysis of ship hull maintenance strategies for a short route hybrid ferry
Wang, Haibin; Oğuz, Elif; Jeong, Byongug; Zhou, Peilin (Elsevier BV, 2018-08-01)
This paper provides a general insight into the importance of proper hull maintenance and suggests an optimal maintenance strategy for ship operators from both an economic and environmental point of view. Results of life cycle assessment show that significant cost reductions can be obtained by renewing steels every 10 years within the proposed hull maintenance strategy. The assessment also indicates that annual hull inspections and re-coating can contribute to reducing hull resistance and hence fuel consumpt...
Life cycle assessment of off-highway trucks and belt conveyors for sustainable mining
Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
In recent years increasing growth rate of all industrial fields generated an emerging energy demand and consequent environmental problems worldwide. Defining environmental profiles of products and systems using environmental tools, such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), is a critical issue for sustainable mining. In order to tackle the increasing environmental challenges and air emissions induced by surface coal mining, alternative material handling options are needed to be evaluated. This research study aims...
Life cycle assessment of wind power for electricity generation in Pakistan
Khalid, Sajida.; Sarı, Ramazan; Department of Earth System Science (2019)
Pakistan is a developing country and energy crisis has always emerged as the key hindrance in economic development. Besides the increasing demand and supply gap, it is alarming fact that the current energy mix is mainly dependent on fossil fuels which results in environmental and energy security issues. As part of efforts for transition towards clean and renewable technologies for electricity generation, the assessments carried out by Pakistan Meteorological Department and Ministry of Energy in collaboratio...
Life cycle and cost assessment on engine selection for an offshore tug vessel
Oğuz, Elif; Wang, Haibin; Zhou, Peilin (2017-10-11)
The objectives of this paper are to find the most cost effective and environmental friendly engine configuration and its application on an offshore tug vessel in aspects of cost-benefit and environmental impact. This aim was achieved by a comparison of two different engine configurations applicable to the propulsion system for a case ship, which is currently at design stage in a Turkish shipyard. Options of engine selections are to choose either two large medium speed diesel engines or four small high speed...
