A philosophical analysis of the biological accounts of morality and altruism
Bilgin, Arda; Sol, Ayhan; Department of Philosophy (2020)
The main purpose of my thesis is to show that morality is not unique to humans and it does not separate humans from nature. To that end I first discuss the issue of emotions to emphasize that biological accounts are more significant than cultural ones. Then, I focus on the notion of altruism that I find central to morality. In this part, I examine different approaches to altruism and try to reveal that the emotion of empathy is the main motivation behind altruistic behavior. I touch upon the mechanisms unde...

A critical evaluation of Gricean reductive analysis of meaning
Dinçer, Şule Nur; Grünberg, David; Department of Philosophy (2019)
The aim of this thesis is to examine Paul Grice’s reductive analysis of the concept of non-natural meaning (meaningNN for short). The two stages of Grice’s reductive analysis will be outlined. The utterer’s meaning in the first stage and utterance-type meaning in the latter will be explained. The thesis will state the important objections and amendments in chronological order made by the selected philosopher, as well as – if available – Grice’s own response to the criticisms. We shall critically evaluate th...
A Critique of the individuation problem in the philosophy of internal relations.
Çelik, Kadir Sinan; İnam, Ahmet; Department of Philosophy (2002)
In the present study, by determining the externalist and internalist accounts of individuation, it is aimed to make a comparative analysis of the individuation problem. After the problems of individuation within substance and bundle theory are shown, based on the interpretation of dialectics as philosophy of internal relations, an alternative account of individuation is tried to develop. Within the framework drawn, it is proposed that Bertell Oilman's conceptualization of the process of abstraction is evalu...
A critical evaluation of Kripke's interpretation of Wittgenstein
Karaağaç, Hasan; Sayan, Erdinç; Department of Philosophy (2004)
This thesis analyzes the relation between Kripke's rule-sceptic argument and Wittgenstein's paradox. Besides, Kripke's claim that the conclusion of Wittgenstein's private language argument is stated in PI 202 will be discussed. The thesis will also evaluate the consistency of Kripke's rule-sceptic argument independently of Wittgenstein's views.
