The Umurlu geothermal reservoir located in Buyuk Menderes Graben, Turkey initially contained around 2% by weight CO_2 dissolved in geothermal reservoir fluid. The produced CO_2 rate declined over one year of production time due to dilution of reservoir gas by degassed injectate. Since CO_2 has a considerable role on Umurlu reservoir performance and energy production, produced non-condensable gas (NCG) has been injected simultaneously with colder degassed injectate from an injection well for the last two months. Produced CO_2 monitored in some production wells showed a marked increase as a result of continuous injection. Apart from reducing CO_2 emissions, it has been observed that CO_2 has a profound effect on the behavior of reservoir pressure around these production wells.

Modelling reinjection of two-phase non-condensable gases and water in geothermal wells
Leontidis, Vlasios; Niknam, Pouriya H.; Durgut, Ismail; Talluri, Lorenzo; Manfrida, Giampaolo; Fiaschi, Daniele; Akın, Serhat; Gainville, Martin (2023-03-01)
Steam production from high enthalpy geothermal systems is frequently accompanied by the emission of non-condensable gases (NCGs), initially dissolved in the liquid phase or mixed in the vapour phase at depth in the reservoir. Capturing and reinjecting geothermal gases (CO2, CH4, NH3, H2S, H2, …) together with condensed steam leads to a significant improvement of the environmental profile of geothermal power systems and helps with reservoir recharge and pressure support. Nowadays, there are several ongoing p...
3D modeling of salt related structures in the friesland platform the Netherlands
Yücel, Kıvanç; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
Southern North Sea Basin is one of the mature hydrocarbon basins in NW Europe and is shaped by a number of phases of tectonic deformations during the Phanerozoic. In addition, mobilization and halokinesis of thick Permian Zechstein Salt has enhanced and contributed to the deformation of the region since Triassic, which further complicated the geology of the region. The Friesland Platform, which is a stable platform area located in northern Netherlands, experienced the main deformation phases that Europe has...
Flow Testing of Balcova Geothermal Field Turkey
Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Parlaktuna, Burak (2015-04-19)
Balçova geothermal field is located in a densely populated area which makes direct heat applications very efficient and economical. Heat produced from Balçova geothermal field is utilized for three main purposes: greenhouse heating, balneology and residential heating. Among these three applications, the latter one is the main application throughout the Balçova District Heating System. The field produces hot water from two different horizons: one shallow and one deeper zone. After had utilized for 16 years, ...
Noble gas isotopes and the chemical composition of geothermal gases from the eastern part of the Buyuk Menderes Graben (Turkey)
Wiersberg, T.; Süer, Selin; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Erzinger, J.; Parlaktuna, Mahmut (2011-12-01)
We present noble gas isotope and gas composition data from eight production wells of the Kizildere geothermal field and from six gas discharging pools from the adjacent Tekke Hamam geothermal field, situated in the eastern segment of the Buyuk Menderes Graben system in western Anatolia (Turkey). Gas from both locations is composed mainly of CO2 with minor contributions of N-2, H2S, CH4, O-2, Ar, H-2, C2+ and He, with higher contents of H2S. He and C2+ in Tekke Hamam samples.
CO2 Decline in Alaşehir (Turkey) Geothermal Reservoir
Akın, Serhat; Aydın, Hakkı; AKIN, TAYLAN (2021-10-01)
Reinjection of gas free of brine into the peripheries of a geothermal reservoir may gradually decline non-condensable gas (NCG) concentration in the reservoir fluid during the operation of geothermal power plants. As a result, gradually decreasing gas emissions can be observed. In this study, we use separator data to calculate produced CO2 amount in the reservoir fluid. The data used is from the Alaşehir geothermal area that is certainly not the one and only target for geothermal production in Turkey. Data ...
