The Role of Mathematics in the Design Process Under the Influence of Computational and Design Technologies

2006-06-07
In the design process today, the use of computational and information technologies demands a new way of thinking: “algorithmic thinking“. The first generation of computera-aided design tools have been replaced by highly sophisticated design tools used not only in design but also in construction and product life. These revolutionary step consists in designing directly in 3-D instead of designing by sections and planes. But are computers and new technologies really employed in design process or simply as a new presentation media? To answer this the present paper discusses the role of mathematics in understanding these new technologies and developing algorithmic thinking in the architectural design process. Then the role of mathematics is also briefly discussed in designing in 3D and developing complementary technologies for architectural design process and software architecture for architecture. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
The position of three-dimensional modeling and visualization techniques in industrial design education
COŞKUN, MERVE; Akiner, Dilem (2012-05-04)
The purpose of this research is to determine the position of three-dimensional modeling and digital visualization within the scope of concept and product development process in the undergraduate education in Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Industrial Design, designate the problems that the students encounter during the integration of these methods to the design process, and finally question how these methods can be incorporated into design education in order to influen...
The effects of performance-based design tools on design thinking process
Görgün Göksu, Gizem; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2022-2)
Design thinking is identified as a paradigm for dealing with problems in many professions, particularly in the field of Architecture. The design thinking process is fundamentally problem-solving to find the best solution. The complexity of design problems increases because different conditions have various and unique requirements. With technological development, designers have started to use design support tools to find the most proper solution to complex problems. Performative architecture is designed usin...
Investigation into adaptive structure in software-embedded products from cybernetic perspective
Yurdakul, E. Ertuğrul; Şener Pedgley, Bahar; Department of Industrial Design (2007)
This study investigates the concept of adaptivity in relation to the evolution of software and hence software embedded products. Whilst laying out the benefits of adaptivity in products, it discusses the potential future threats engendered by the actual change observed in the functionality principles of adaptive products. The discussion is based upon cybernetic theory which defines control technology in the 20th century anew. Accordingly, literature survey on cybernetic theory, evolution of software from co...
Integrating 3D physical and digital modeling into 3D form creation in industrial design education
Öztürk Şengül, Mehtap; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2016)
Digital design media have entered in the design field in the course of the last couple of decades and have rapidly changed the way of practicing in design related professions. As part of this change, digital modeling has taken its place among the basic skills that an industrial designer is expected to have. As a cognitive activity, modeling plays very significant roles in the form creation related skill acquisition processes in design education. Therefore an urgent need for new approaches for the integratio...
