The purpose of this research is to determine the position of three-dimensional modeling and digital visualization within the scope of concept and product development process in the undergraduate education in Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Industrial Design, designate the problems that the students encounter during the integration of these methods to the design process, and finally question how these methods can be incorporated into design education in order to influence the design process positively. The timing, content and structure of visualization and modeling courses within the 4-year undergraduate design education and the relationship of the knowledge given in these courses with the design studio should be considered. The Role of User Research in Design Process in Product Design Education
Yavuz, Cemil; Yalman Yıldırım, Zeynep (2017-08-01)
Building product usage scenario of products, building product-user relationship, thinking like users and empathizing with users are the most frequently encountered problems in project-based studio courses in current undergraduate education of Industrial Design and Industrial Product Design departments in Turkey. In this research, undergraduate second and third year programs of Industrial Design departments of 13 different universities in Turkey are examined. Learning outcomes, contents and objectives of the ...
Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
Evaluation of basic design education at METU department of industrial design
Bayırlı, Ümit; Özgen Koçyıldırım, Dalsu; Department of Industrial Design (2015)
Basic Design is a crucial course for design education. This course is offered in the first year to initiate students to the theory, practice and communication of design and to lay a basis on which more advanced and specialized knowledge will be gathered throughout the rest of their design education and careers. However, the course's results, influence in design education and methods of conduct receives many criticisms from students, educators, designers and researchers. Even though the course plays a foundi...
Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
Integrating 3D physical and digital modeling into 3D form creation in industrial design education
Öztürk Şengül, Mehtap; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2016)
Digital design media have entered in the design field in the course of the last couple of decades and have rapidly changed the way of practicing in design related professions. As part of this change, digital modeling has taken its place among the basic skills that an industrial designer is expected to have. As a cognitive activity, modeling plays very significant roles in the form creation related skill acquisition processes in design education. Therefore an urgent need for new approaches for the integratio...
