The Çöpler epithermal Au deposit and related subeconomic porphyry Cu-Au deposit is located in central eastern Turkey, about 120 km west of the city of Erzincan. Porphyry-epithermal Au-Cu mineralization is hosted by the middle Eocene Çöpler-Kabataş magmatic complex which has been emplaced into a succession of Permian–Cretaceous metasedimentary and carbonate rocks within an ENE-trending structural window exposed in the northeastern margin of the Tauride-Anatolide Block. 40Ar/39Ar dating of three samples of igneous biotite and/or hornblende from least altered intrusive rocks from the deposit yielded plateau ages between 44.13 ± 0.38 and 43.75 ± 0.26 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar ages of hydrothermal biotite (43.84 ± 0.26 Ma) and sericite (44.44 ± 0.28 Ma), and Re-Os ages from two molybdenite samples (43.9 ± 0.2 Ma and 44.6 ± 0.2 Ma) broadly overlap with the 40Ar/39Ar ages of intrusive phases suggesting a life span of ≤1 m.y. for the magmatic-hydrothermal system at Çöpler. The Çöpler-Kabataş intrusive rocks range in composition from granodiorite to diorite, and are characterized by abundant phenocrystic plagioclase, and hornblende ± biotite, set in a fine-grained quartzofeldspathic groundmass. Whole-rock major and trace element compositions of these intrusive lithologies are characteristic of magmatic rocks that are formed in continental arcs in that they are medium- to high-K calc-alkaline with enrichments in large ion lithophile and light rare earth elements, and relative depletions in medium and heavy rare earth elements. Based on new geochemical and geochronological data, the middle Eocene calc-alkaline magmatism at the Çöpler-Kabataş magmatic complex is interpreted to have formed in a back arc setting with respect to the contemporaneous Helete volcanic arc in southeast Anatolia. The middle Eocene magmatism in the region was developed in response to the roll-back of the southern Neotethys slab in the Paleocene. This later facilitated extension in the upper plate and northward broadening of magmatism mainly along deep-seated, ENE-trending transcurrent fault systems. The rather unusual tectonic setting of the Çöpler Au deposit is analogous to some other Au-rich back-arc porphyry deposits such as Bajo de la Alumbrera (Argentina) and Bingham Canyon (USA).

Post miocene deformation of the area between Alibey (Kızılcahamam) and Karalar (Kazan) villages, nw Ankara (Turkey)
Karaca, Aykut; Rojay, Fuat Bora; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
The study area is located within the Neogene-Quaternary sequences on top of the Mesozoic accreted mass at the northwest of Kazan (40 km NW of Ankara) between Karalar and Alibey villages. The research deals with the post-Miocene deformational history of an area situated at the southern edge of Galatian Volcanic Province. Two main Neogene rock sequences are cropped out; 1) Late Miocene Pazar Formation, 2) Plio-Quaternary Sinap Formation. The Pazar Formation has a succession composed mainly of clastics at the ...
TIMING AND NATURE OF ALTERATION AND MINERALIZATION AT THE ÖKSÜT AU-CU DEPOSIT (KAYSERI, CENTRAL ANATOLIA)
Yurdakul, Emrecan; İmer, Ali; Department of Geological Engineering (2022-6-29)
The Öksüt high-sulfidation epithermal gold-copper deposit is hosted within the late Miocene Develidağ Volcanic Complex (DVC) in south-central Anatolia. Mineralization mainly occurs in two domains, the Keltepe and Güneytepe orebodies, where steeply-dipping and pervasively supergene oxidized breccia zones exploited funnel-shaped diatreme conduits within andesite porphyry. Emplacement of these breccias was largely controlled by sub-vertical faults with dominant normal-slip components. Mineralized breccias comp...
Neotectonics and seismicity of the Ankara region : a case study in the Uruş area
Kaplan, Tülin; Koçyiğit, Ali; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
Study area, the Urus province, is located 70 km WNW of city of Ankara. Major settlements in the study area are two counties, Urus and Güdül; and there are a number of villages, such as, from W to E, Macun, Yogunpelit, Kabaca, Üregil, Özköy, Tahtaciörencik, Kirkkavak, Kavaközü, Kayi and Karacaören. The study area is 189 km2 in size and included in 1/25000-scaled topographic quadrangles of H28a3, a4, d1 and d2. The Güdül- Urus section of the Çeltikçi morphotectonic depression (Çeltikçi Basin) drained by the A...
Geology geochemistry and geochronology of the Çöpler porphyry epithermal gold deposit central eastern Turkey
İmer, Ali; Creaser, Robert (null; 2010-11-04)
The Çöpler deposit is located about 120 km west of the city of Erzincan in central eastern Turkey, and it consists of a subeconomic porphyry-type Cu-Au mineralization overlain by paragenetically later low-sulfidation epithermal-style Au mineralization. The porphyry-epithermal mineralization is spatially related to middle Eocene intrusive rocks, which have been emplaced into a succession of Permian-Cretaceous metasedimentary and carbonate rocks within an ENE-WSW-trending structural window exposed in the nort...
Structural controls of Özyurt shear-hosted gold deposit, Niğde, central Türkiye
Onat, Kaan; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Department of Geological Engineering (2022-8)
Shear-hosted Özyurt Gold Deposit is located in the Niğde Massif, a metamorphic core complex at the southern tip of Kırşehir Block, in Central Türkiye. The massif is composed of alternations of gneiss, schist, quartzite, marble, and amphibolites. It is tectonically overlain by Neotethyan ophiolites and intruded by Üçkapılı Granite. Gold mineralization is hosted along the foliation surfaces, by oxidized cataclastic breccias formed in schists along a high-angle fault network, as well as the gossans at the cont...
