The economical efficiency of friction pendulum bearings (FPB) for seismic retrofitting of typical Illinois bridges with wall type piers is studied. A typical bridge with heavy wall piers was carefully selected by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for the purpose of this study. The seismic analysis of the bridge revealed that the bearings, and substructures of the bridge are vulnerable and need to be retrofitted. A conventional retrofitting strategy is developed for the bridge and the cost of retrofit is estimated. Next, the bridge is further studied to develop appropriate techniques for upgrading its seismic capacity using FPB and the seismic analysis is repeated. It is observed that the FPB effectively mitigated the seismic forces and eliminated the need for retrofitting of the substructures of the bridge.

Seismic Retrofitting of Typical Illinois Bridges by Response Modification
Dicleli, Murat (null; 2004-01-01)
The impact of seismic retrofitting of typical Illinois bridges, via response modification using friction pendulum bearings (FPB), on the state economy is studied. For this purpose, two typical bridges with distinct characteristics were selected by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The seismic analyses of the bridges revealed that the bearings, wingwalls and substructures are vulnerable and need to be retrofitted. Conventional retrofitting strategies are developed for the bridges and the retrofit...
Comparative assessment of the efficiency of seismic isolation for seismic retrofitting of highway bridges in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity
Karalar, Memduh; Dicleli, Murat (null; 2019-07-06)
In this paper, the economical and structural efficiency of friction pendulum bearings (FPB) for retrofitting typical seismically vulnerable bridges in the State of Illinois is studied. For this purpose, a bridge was selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to represent typical seismically vulnerable bridges commonly used in the State of Illinois. A comprehensive structural model of the bridge was first constructed for seismic analysis. An iterative multi-mode response spectrum (MMRS) ana...

Experimental Determination of Resistance Characteristics of Support Details Used in Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders
Baran, Eray; French, Catherine; Schultz, Arturo (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-09-01)
Static load tests were performed on support details used at the ends of prestressed concrete pedestrian bridge girders to determine the resistance characteristics of girder supports in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the girders. The specimens tested represent support details that have also been widely used in prestressed concrete highway bridges in Minnesota and in other states. Two specimens, one representing the free-end detail and one representing the restrained-end detail were s...
