Fracture toughness behavior of coarse-grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ) of the welds in API5LX70M pipes has been investigated by Charpy impact and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) tests at -10°C. The present work also includes comprehensive pre- and post-test metallography and analyses. A correlation between local brittle and soft spots in intercritically reheated coarse-grain heat affected zone (ICCGHAZ) and toughness of the as-welded material has been observed. The degree of dilution and the microstructure of ICCGHAZ varied dramatically with heat input while there is no considerable change in the prior austenite grain size. It has been concluded that orientation and distribution of the secondary phases are the governing factors on toughness behavior of the as-welded steel.

Effect of retrogression and reaging heat treatment on corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of AA7050 alloy
Akgün, Nevzat; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2004)
The effect of retrogression and reaging heat treatment on corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior on AA7050 T73651 aluminum alloy is investigated. CT (Compact Tension) specimens are prepared in LS direction for fatigue crack growth tests . Samples are solution heat treated at 477 °C and aged at 120 °C for 24 h (T6 condition). After that, samples are retrogressed at 200 °C for times of 1, 5, 30, 55 and 80 minutes in a circulating oil bath. Then, samples are re-aged at 120 °C for 24 h (T6 condition). Hardness...
Effect of lead core heating on the seismic performance of bridges isolated with LRB in near-fault zones
Ozdemir, Gokhan; Dicleli, Murat (2012-11-01)
In this paper, the effect of lead core heating and associated strength deterioration on the seismic response of bridges isolated with lead rubber bearings (LRB) is investigated as a function of the characteristics of the isolator and near fault ground motions with forward rupture directivity effect. Furthermore, the ability of bounding analyses to provide a design envelope for maximum isolator force and maximum isolator displacement is verified. For this purpose, a series of nonlinear dynamic analyses are c...
Effect of post-processing heat treatment on the mechanical properties of inconel 718 fabricated by selective laser melting
Özer, Seren; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2020)
In this study, effect of the building direction and post-processing heat treatments on the microstructure and high temperature mechanical properties of as-fabricatedInconel 718 alloys have been investigated. Inconel 718 samples were fabricated in two different building directions such that their longitudinalaxes wereeither parallel (horizontally built) or perpendicular (vertically built) to the building plate. During the selective laser melting (SLM)process, some undesired features can...
Effect of longitudinal stiffeners on the flanges to improve the low cycle fatigue performance of steel H-piles
Dicleli, Murat (null; 2015-09-23)
In this study, the effect of stiffeners on the low cycle fatigue life of steel H-piles in integral bridges is investigated to prevent local buckling occurring at high strain amplitudes. For this purpose, experimental testing of a number of regular and stiffened steel H-piles under cyclic displacement reversals is conducted. Then, to compare experiment results with the finite element model for the HP220x57 steel specimen, finite element model is constructed similarly according to actual HP220x57 steel specim...
Effect of solidification rate on microstructure and primary carbides of AISI DC 53 cold work tool steel
Cardakh, Ismail Seckin; Kalkanlı, Ali (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-05-01)
The solidification behavior of AISI DC 53 cold work tool steel was investigated by means of a cooling curve and its first derivative. Copper and sand wedge-shaped molds were used to obtain various solidification rates. To reveal the cooling rate degree during solidification, the secondary dendrite arm spacing of the steel alloy was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The solidification rates of each section for both wedge steel samples were calculated by means of the secondary dendrite arm spaci...
