Project team members interact with large multivariate datasets while monitoring the performance of construction projects. The analyses of such datasets are traditionally performed with statistical methods and usage of 2D graphics with x-y coordinates. However, these methods are disadvantageous compared to multi-dimensional information visualization, which can provide patterns of unprocessed data in a more descriptive and clear way. In order to provide support for visualization of data, several toolkits with varying capabilities are created in Human Computer Interactions (HCI) domain. Example capabilities of these toolkits include supporting the display of and interaction with multivariate datasets in various forms. The research described in this paper assesses the benefits and limitations of three of these information visualization toolkits and an advanced graphics called, parallel coordinates that is designed to help in the analysis of multivariate datasets. As a test-bed, we used a dataset composed of two-weeks worth of payload data associated with an earthwork activity integrated with weather information. This dataset is studied in another paper with the usage of a scatter graph to investigate the correlation of hourly averages of payload and weather data and hence this test-bed provides a good baseline to compare the value of scatter graphs and parallel coordinates in supporting productivity analyses. This paper initially presents the overview of the three prominent HCI toolkits that we evaluated based on their inputs, representation schemas, outputs and interaction functionalities. As part of this evaluation, the investigation of the support of parallel coordinates in gaining insights about excavation activity productivity using the payload and weather datasets is presented and compared to the findings from the previous paper. The paper concludes with the advantages and disadvantages of the toolkits and parallel coordinates, and the ways in which these toolkits should be improved and modified to support the visualization of and interaction with the performance of construction projects.

Evaluation and selection of case tools: a methodology and a case study
Okşar, Koray; Okşar, Koray; Department of Information Systems (2010)
Today’s Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) technology covers nearly all activities in software development ranging from requirement analysis to deployment.Organizations are evaluating CASE tool solutions to automate or ease their processes. While reducing human errors, these tools also increase control, visibility and auditability of the processes. However, to achieve these benefits, the right tool or tools should be selected for usage in the intended processes. This is not an easy task when the vas...
Potential Utilization of Building Information Models for Planning Maintenance Activities
Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Garrett, James H (2010-06-30)
The opportunities for leveraging Building Information Models (BIMs) for facility operations are compelling and yet utilization of BIMs during building operation and maintenance is falling behind the BIM implementations for design and construction. Current studies of BIMs used for the operations phase and commercially available technologies focus on transferring information from the design and construction phases to the operations phase by enabling creation and capturing of digital facility information throu...
Modeling highway projects: The need for Highway Information Modeling (HIM) guideline and information exchange
Ertaymaz, Uğurcan; Atasoy Özcan, Güzide (2019-06-01)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of the latest trends in the construction sector and utilized for modeling, reviewing and analyzing building projects for the last two decades with benefits including visualization, planning, and estimation. BIM provides a well-organized and streamlined approach for building projects; however, its application for highway projects has been scarce. Progressing requirements, increasing number of stakeholders, integrated design solutions, expanding model uses and rapid ...
Improving the performance of Hadoop/Hive by sharing scan and computation tasks
Özal, Serkan; Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı; Doğaç, Asuman; Department of Computer Engineering (2013)
MapReduce is a popular model of executing time-consuming analytical queries as a batch of tasks on large scale data. During simultaneous execution of multiple queries, many oppor- tunities can arise for sharing scan and/or computation tasks. Executing common tasks only once can reduce the total execution time of all queries remarkably. Therefore, we propose to use Multiple Query Optimization (MQO) techniques to improve the overall performance of Hadoop Hive, an open source SQL-based distributed warehouse sy...
Design and implementation of a distributed workflow enactment service
Gokkoca, E; Altinel, M; Cingil, I; Tatbul, EN; Koksal, P; Doğaç, Asuman (1997-06-27)
Workflows are activities involving the coordinated execution of multiple tasks performed by different processing entities, mostly in distributed heterogeneous environments which are very common in enterprises of even moderate complexity. In current commercial workflow systems, the workflow scheduler is a single centralized component. A distributed workflow enactment service on the other hand should contain several schedulers on different nodes of a network each executing parts of process instances. Such an ...
