Permanent support design for an existing drainage tunnel at ELİ mine in Turkey

2007-12-11
In this study, the results of a new permanent support system design for the re-use of an existing mine drainage tunnel driven through marl rock unit is presented. The tunnel which is 1050 meters long was driven by drilling and blasting and temporarily supported by I section steel sets about two years ago. It is now planned by the mine management to be used as a transportation tunnel for many years. Along the tunnel route, two different rock mass units which were named as marl and graywacke units were encountered. This paper presents the only results of permanent support design for marl rock unit. Numerical modeling with a 2D finite element package was employed to simulate different loading conditions, including the surcharge load due to the mine waste expected to be applied on the surface over the tunnel in future. Surcharge load was interestingly moving the whole model frame down including the overall tunnel section, and therefore, the location of the bottom boundary of the model frame was important, compared to the regular tunnel modeling and design problems.

Visual evaluation and remaining service life assessment of a reinforced concrete arch bridge: Çayirhan bridge
Caner, Alp; Türer, Ahmet (2014-01-01)
Remaining service life assessment of bridges are needed when the visual inspection results indicate that there is serious degradation of structural members due to aging leading to not functioning as originally designed. These inspections can include detailed visual inspection of elements including recording crack widths and patterns, under water inspection, truck load tests, and material tests. This paper focuses on the inspection methods and determination of the remaining service life of a 57 year old rein...
Deformation analysis of concrete faced Aydın Karacasu dam and comparison of theoretical results with measurements
Tütüncübaşı Tosun, Tuğçe; Çokça, Erdal; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
The improvement in design technologies has enhanced the use of different fill materials in construction of the embankment dams. Rockfill is one of the most preferred fill materials for embankment dam. Also, use of different fill material such as sand-gravel has been preferred in recent years. Previous studies on concrete faced sand-gravel fill dam, results of the laboratory experiments and in-situ testing analysis display that using sand-gravel as a fill material is not only cost-effective but also safe and...
Seismic design of lifeline bridge using hybrid seismic isolation
Dicleli, Murat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2002-03-01)
This paper presents the merits of a hybrid seismic isolation system used for the seismic design of a major bridge. The bridge is analyzed for two different arrangements of seismic isolation systems. The first arrangement consists of friction pendulum bearings at all substructure locations; the other incorporates a hybrid system where laminated elastomeric bearings are used at the abutments and friction pendulum bearings at the piers. Analysis results have demonstrated that the hybrid seismic isolation syste...
Technological characteristics of abrick masonry structure and their relationship with the structural behaviour /
Aktaş, Yasemin Didem; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Archaeometry (2006)
The aim of this study is to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of construction materials in relation with the structural behaviour of a historic structure. Within this framework, the brick masonry superstructure of Tahir ile Zuhre Mescidi, a XIIIth century Seljuk monument in Konya was selected as case study. The study started with the determination of the basic physical (bulk density, effective porosity, water absorption capacity), mechanical (modulus of elasticity, uniaxial compressive stre...
Analytical study on seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete buildings using steel braces with shear link
Durucan, Cengizhan; Dicleli, Murat (2010-10-01)
This paper is focused on a proposed seismic retrofitting system (PRS) configured to upgrade the performance of seismically vulnerable reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The PRS is composed of a rectangular steel housing frame with chevron braces and a yielding shear link connected between the braces and the frame. The retrofitting system is installed within the bays of an RC building frame to enhance the stiffness, strength and ductility of the structure. The PRS and a conventional retrofitting system usin...
