Recognizing actions from still images
İKİZLER CİNBİŞ, NAZLI; Cinbiş, Ramazan Gökberk; PEHLİVAN, SELEN; DUYGULU ŞAHİN, PINAR (2008-12-11)
In this paper, we approach the problem of understanding human actions from still images. Our method involves representing the pose with a spatial and orientational histogramming of rectangular regions on a parse probability map. We use LDA to obtain a more compact and discriminative feature representation and binary SVMs for classification. Our results over a new dataset collected for this problem show that by using a rectangle histogramming approach, we can discriminate actions to a great extent. We also s...
Learning Turkish
Spitzer, Leo (Modern Language Association (MLA), 2011-05-01)
Emigration is translation. Written by Leo Spitzer in 1934, “Learning Turkish” offers a glimpse into the historical circumstances of his and other German academics' exile in Istanbul—an exile that plays a foundational role in comparative literature, as Erich Auerbach, Edward Said, Aamir Mufti, and Emily Apter have argued. Spitzer's attempt to analyze the characteristics of the Turkish language while that language was transforming amplifies recent critical attempts to understand “modern Turkey's nation-based ...

Casting inference to the best explanation's lot with active inference
Davoody Benı, Majıd (2023-01-01)
This paper draws on the resources of computational neuroscience (an account of active inference under the free energy principle) to address Bas van Fraassen's bad lot objection to the inference to the best explanation (IBE). The general assumption of this paper is that IBE is a finessed form of active inferences that self-organising systems perform to maximise the chance of their survival. Under this assumption, the paper aims to establish the following points: first, the capacity to learn to perform explan...
