This thesis explores the formation and transformation of the European Union’s (EU) trade relations in its integration process, mainly considering the enlargements it has completed so far. Therefore, it seeks to answer how the six founding-core members and the newcomers, who joined the EU after its establishment, have shaped the trade relations of the EU between 1958 and 2018. The methodology is to demonstrate the trade policy formation and its reflection on the EU’s actual trade relations by presenting detailed descriptive statistics about continuities and changes in (i) the EU’s trade volume in both extra and intra-EU trade, (ii) main trading partners, (iii) sectoral distribution of trade, which is mainly distributed in agricultural, manufactured and energy products. Based on a detailed study of the EU’s trade relations and trade policy, this thesis argues that the six founding-core members of the EU, together with the UK, have shaped and directed the trade relations of this trading bloc until 2018. Furthermore, in scrutinizing the formation of the EU’s trade relations, it is revealed that the EU has followed the cyclical trend of liberal trade policies pursued in the liberal world order, which also favored the interests of this core-founding group.

YIldız, Ayselin Gözde; Eralp, Yakup Atila; Department of International Relations (2012)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the external dimension of the European Union’s (EU) immigration policy and its implications for transit countries through a comparative study of Turkey and Morocco. The thesis examines the development and institutionalization of the EU’s externalization of its immigration policy within a chronological and theoretical context. Applying the theoretical debate concerning “Europeanization beyond EU borders”, it investigates to what extent the EU has successfully external...
Reforming the European union budget: a socıal constructivist policy approach
Deniz, Mustafa; Kahraman, Sevilay; Department of International Relations (2010)
The budget of the European Union has accomplished a significant role for European integration in the history of the Union. However, it has not resulted into anticipated developments compatible with the Union’s institutional policy reform process in the last decades. The budget has emerged as a consequence of path dependent developments in its historical progress, which has dragged the European Union to a critical stage. It is rather challenging for the Union now to sustain the current structure of the budge...
THE EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
Kahraman, Sevilay (Ankara Avrupa Calismalari Dergisi, 2006)
The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) which can be viewed as the most significant geopolitical project of the European Union (EU) after 2004 enlargement, also constitutes one of the key issues of the external agenda of the Union. The ENP is a new policy initiated in 2003 and implemented in 2005 and it offers a new partnership between the enlarged EU and wider Europe, the latter including both the EU's old Southern neighbours and the new Eastern ones as well as the Southern Caucasus countries. Central to t...
Social market economy: a discursive framework for European social model?
Atabay, Seda; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of European Studies (2008)
The thesis mainly scrutinizes the evolution of European Social Dimension from the early period of the European integration to the Lisbon Summit of 2000 and the formation of the draft EU Constitution in 2003. While the focus is on the changing role of social policy at the European Union level during the period of welfare state transformation, the thesis tries to lay down the normative and discursive linkages constructed between the concepts of European Social Model and the Social Market Economy. Subsequent t...

Gürdağ, Hande; Kaya, Ahmet Raşit; Department of European Studies (2008)
The main aim of this thesis is to examine the perspectives of the European public opinion on the issue of Turkish membership to the EU. That way the question whether Turkish accession can be managed in a similar way to that of other enlargements will be better enlightened. This thesis will examine how the general public perspective is shaped or changed in the post Helsinki era. In order to determine the general tendencies of public opinion of EU, on Turkey’s accession; three approaches on the issue, British...
