In this study, extremely highly plastic soil samples were collected from clay deposits in the Akyurt district of Ankara (Turkey), near Esenboga Airport. Hydrated lime and fly ash were applied as chemical stabilizers. The clay samples were mixed with a stabilizing agent considering the dry weight (lime content: 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9%; fly ash content: 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%). The engineering properties of the improved soil samples were determined via laboratory tests. The changes in engineering properties, especially in regard to the swell potential and compressive strength, were analyzed in this paper. Correlations between index properties, swell percentage and swell pressure were established. The effective lime content reducing the liquid limit and plasticity index ranged from 4 to 5%, whereas approximately 8% lime was necessary to attain an allowable swell percentage. Fly ash did not effectively improve the extremely highly plastic clay in reasonable amounts (i.e., 20 to 25%) in terms of its swelling properties.

Evaluation of microplastics removal efficiency at a wastewater treatment plant discharging to the Sea of Marmara
Vardar, Suat; Onay, Turgut T.; Demirel, Burak; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2021-11-15)
Levels, composition and fate of microplastics (MPs) were investigated along different compartments of a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with nutrient removal on the northern Sea of Marmara coast (Istanbul, Turkey). When all samples were combined, fibers were found to be the most dominant particles, followed by hard fragments. 500–1000 μm and 1000–2000 μm were the most common size ranges for wastewater and sludge, respectively. Rate of removal differed for sizes and shapes of the particles combin...
Atmospheric nutrient inputs to the northern levantine basin from a long-term observation: sources and comparison with riverine inputs
Koçak, Mustafa; TUĞRUL, SÜLEYMAN; Mihalopoulos, N (2010-01-01)
Aerosol and rainwater samples have been collected at a rural site located on the coastline of the Eastern Mediterranean, Erdemli, Turkey between January 1999 and December 2007. Riverine sampling was carried out at five Rivers (Ceyhan, Seyhan, Goksu, Berdan and Lamas) draining into the Northeastern Levantine Basin (NLB) between March 2002 and July 2007. Samples have been analyzed for macronutrients of phosphate, silicate, nitrate and ammonium (PO43-, Sidiss, NO3- and NH4+). Phosphate and silicate in aerosol ...
Modeling of lithology induced chemical anomalies in the aquifer systems of the Kazan Trona deposit area, Ankara, Turkey
Çamur, Mehmet Zeki; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2008-04-01)
The study was carried out in order to investigate existing hydrogeochemical relationships between groundwater environment and geological units in the Kazan trona deposit area, Ankara, Turkey. Evaluations indicate that concentrations of alkalinity, boron, chloride and sodium in the upgradient groundwater of the Eocene sedimentary units gradually increase toward downgradient by the interactions of saline minerals (searlesite, shortite, northupite and pyrite) present in the secondary structures (microfractures...
Enzymatic production of xylooligosaccharides from cotton stalks
Akpinar, Ozlem; Ak, Ozlem; Kavas, Aysegul; Bakir, Ufuk; Yılmaz, Levent (2007-07-11)
Xylooligosaccharide (XO) production was performed from xylan, which was obtained by alkali extraction from cotton stalk, a major agricultural waste in Turkey. Enzymatic hydrolysis was selected to prevent byproduct formation such as xylose and furfural. Xylan was hydrolyzed using a commercial xylanase preparation, and the effects of pH, temperature, hydrolysis period, and substrate and enzyme concentrations on the XO yield and degree of polymerization (DP) were investigated. Cotton stalk contains about 21% x...
Investigation of short and long term trends in the eastern mediterranean aerosol composition
Öztürk, Fatma; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2009)
Approximately 2000 daily aerosol samples were collected at Antalya (30°3430.54” E, 36°47’30.54”N) on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey between 1993 and 2001. High volume PM10 sampler was used for the collection of samples on Whatman41 filters. Collected samples were analyzed by a combination of analytical techniques. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) was used to measure trace element content of the collected samples from Li to U. Major ions...
