Aluminum alloys are heat treated for better specific strength. In certain cases, an intermediate cold work is applied between solution heat treatment and aging. In this study, a specific tube forming technique called flow forming is applied as the intermediate cold work to produce Al2024-T8 grade tubes, resulting in enhancement of mechanical properties. The correlation between the amount of cold work and final mechanical properties is studied through tensile tests, SEM and XRD. The study is concluded with a discussion on the impact of precipitations and phases on the obtained improvements.

The effect of austempering parameters on impact and fracture toughness of din 35nicrmov12.5 gun barrel steel
Aksu, Engin; Atala, Haluk; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2005)
In this study the effects of different austempering times and temperatures on impact toughness, hardness and fracture toughness properties of 35NiCrMoV12.5 gun barrel steel are investigated. 300 °C, 325 °C and 350 °C were chosen as austempering temperatures. Isothermal holding times at these temperatures were chosen as 1 minute, 10 minutes, 1 hour and 10 hours. It was found that, 350 °C being an exception, austempering temperature and impact toughness has an inverse relationship and impact toughness increas...
The effect of hot-deformation on mechanical properties and age hardening characteristics of Al-Mg-Si based wought aluminum alloys
Tan, Evren; Ögel, Bilgehan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2006)
Microstructural and mechanical characterizations of heat treatable Al-Mg-Si-Cu based wrought aluminum alloys have been studied. The aim of this work was to produce fine grained, high strength alloy by adjusting processing conditions: deformation, solutionizing and aging. First, primary characterization was carried out via SEM-EDS analyses and tensile tests. Then an extensive experimental study has been carried out on two sets of samples. The first set has been studied to determine the ideal conditions for s...
Effect of retrogression and reaging heat treatment on corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of AA7050 alloy
Akgün, Nevzat; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2004)
The effect of retrogression and reaging heat treatment on corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior on AA7050 T73651 aluminum alloy is investigated. CT (Compact Tension) specimens are prepared in LS direction for fatigue crack growth tests . Samples are solution heat treated at 477 °C and aged at 120 °C for 24 h (T6 condition). After that, samples are retrogressed at 200 °C for times of 1, 5, 30, 55 and 80 minutes in a circulating oil bath. Then, samples are re-aged at 120 °C for 24 h (T6 condition). Hardness...
The Effects of chromic acid anodizing on fatigue behavior of (AMS4050) 7050 T7451 aluminum alloy
İlhan, Çağrı; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2019)
7050 T7451 is a solution heat treated, stress relieved, and overaged aluminum alloy which has extensively used in aerospace industry. Chromic Acid Anodizing (CAA) is a treatment against corrosion by producing aluminum oxide layer (Al2O3) at the surface. Although corrosion resistance is increased by CAA, fatigue life of the material is affected inversely due to CAA process. CAA process consists of pre-treatments (degrease, etching etc.) and anodizing steps which have different effects on fatigue life of the ...
The effect of B4C reinforcements on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of AA7075 alloy matrix produced by squeeze casting
Demir, Mehmet Emin; ÇELİK, YAHYA HIŞMAN; KILIÇKAP, EROL; Kalkanlı, Ali (2022-11-01)
Aluminum and its alloys have become the most popular materials in applications aiming to provide lightness due to their low density. However, the low mechanical properties compared to other competitors are among the disadvantages of aluminum and its alloys. This is an important motivation factor in researching strength increasing mechanisms in aluminum and its alloys. In this study, the effects of reinforcement ratio and type on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of the AA7075/B4C ...
