This study aims to present a mathematics teaching content aiming to support the teaching of slope for understanding slope conceptually in the classroom environment using computers and dynamic mathematics software. Within the scope of an implemented instructional sequence, the developed and also open to development steps of the activities integrated with GeoGebra files were evaluated so that eighth-graders can make sense of the slope concept in daily life situations. The findings revealed that the implementation of the instructional sequence prepared to explain the slope of a physical structure/object through activities integrated with GeoGebra files involving various situations on slope-related and non-slope related attributes offers a rich environment for mathematics teaching-learning. The findings also revealed that there may be some difficulties during implementation and how these difficulties can be overcome. As a result of the study, suggestions are made for future studies to be conducted on this topic.

Investigation of Using Online Video Case Discussions in Teacher Education: Sources of Evidence of Mathematics Learning
Osmanoglu, Aslihan; Koç, Yusuf; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2013-03-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers' analyses of student learning in a video case of mathematics instruction via an online learning forum. The study was conducted in the context of three different mathematics methods courses in a 4-year college in the Midwestern United States. Twenty-six students (19 undergraduate and 7 master's students) participated in the study. As a course assignment, the participants were asked to watch and discuss a video case of ma...
Learning Mathematics with Interactive Whiteboards and Computer-Based Graphing Utility
Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Kaya, Sukru (2015-04-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of a technology-supported learning environment utilizing an interactive whiteboard (IWB) and NuCalc graphing software compared to a traditional direct instruction-based environment on student achievement in graphs of quadratic functions and attitudes towards mathematics and technology. Sixty-five high school graduates attending cram schools (called dershane in Turkish) to study for the university entrance examination participated in the study. The signific...
Middle school mathematics teachers’ mathematical practices in teaching slope, linear equations, and graphs in technology enhanced classroom environment
Yemen Karpuzcu, Seçil; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Education (2017)
The aim of this study was to examine an in-service middle school mathematics teacher’s mathematical practices in teaching slope, linear equations and graphs in a technology enhanced classroom environment while enacting an instructional sequence that was designed based on the national curriculum. The technology utilized in the study was GeoGebra materials within computers that were developed by the teacher and the researcher to be used for the instructional sequence. The data was collected during the spring ...
Technological pedagogical content knowledge (tpack) development of preservice middle school mathematics teachers in statistics teaching: a microteaching lesson study
Kurt, Gamze; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Elementary Education (2016)
The current study examined the development of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) of preservice mathematics teachers in statistics teaching with virtual manipulatives in the context of a microteaching lesson study (MLS). Since “technology integration is described by how and why it is used rather its amount or type”, integrating technology into education necessitates investigation of instructional uses of digital tools and resources (Earle, 2002, p. 8). TPACK framework suggested by Koehler an...
Middle school mathematics teachers' use of textbooks and integration of textbook tasks into practice: a mixed methods study
Özgeldi, Meriç; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The current study aimed to explore middle school mathematics teachers’ use of mathematics textbooks and examine their integration of tasks in the textbooks into teaching. The framework of a mixed methods research design guided data collection in this study. A questionnaire called the Use of Mathematics Textbooks Questionnaire was developed and validated to identify the ways teachers benefit from textbooks. The factor analysis revealed four dimensions, namely Reading Student Edition Textbook, Selecting Quest...
