© 2021 Emre Mülazimoǧlu et al.To mitigate dictionary attacks or similar undesirable automated attacks to information systems, developers mostly prefer using CAPTCHA challenges as Human Interactive Proofs (HIPs) to distinguish between human users and scripts. Appropriate use of CAPTCHA requires a setup that balances between robustness and usability during the design of a challenge. The previous research reveals that most usability studies have used accuracy and response time as measurement criteria for quantitative analysis. The present study aims at applying optical neuroimaging techniques for the analysis of CAPTCHA design. The functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy technique was used to explore the hemodynamic responses in the prefrontal cortex elicited by CAPTCHA stimulus of varying types. The findings suggest that regions in the left and right dorsolateral and right dorsomedial prefrontal cortex respond to the degrees of line occlusion, rotation, and wave distortions present in a CAPTCHA. The systematic addition of the visual effects introduced nonlinear effects on the behavioral and prefrontal oxygenation measures, indicative of the emergence of Gestalt effects that might have influenced the perception of the overall CAPTCHA figure.

The role of visual features in text-based captchas: an fnirs study for usable security
Mülazimoğlu, Emr; Acartürk, Cengiz; Department of Cyber Security (2019)
In order to mitigate dictionary attacks or similar undesirable automated attacks to information systems, developers mostly prefer using CAPTCHA challenges as Human Interactive Proofs (HIPs) to distinguish between human users and scripts. An appropriate use of CAPTCHA requires a setup balance between robustness and usability during the design of a challenge. The previous research reveals that most of the usability studies have used accuracy and response time as measurement criteria for quantitative analysis....
A Novel Bag-of-Visual-Words Approach for Geospatial Object Detection
Aytekin, Caglar; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (2011-04-29)
A novel bag-of-visual-words algorithm is presented with two extensions compared to its classical version: exploiting scale information and weighting visual words. The scale information that is already extracted with SIFT detector is included as an additional element to the SIFT key-point descriptor, while the visual words are weighted during histogram assignment proportional to their importance which is measured by the ratio of their occurrences in the object to the occurrences in the background. The algori...
The effect of software design patterns on object-oriented software quality and maintainability
Türk, Tuna; Bilgen, Semih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
This study investigates the connection between design patterns, object oriented (OO) quality metrics and software maintainability. The literature on OO metrics, design patterns and software maintainability are reviewed, the relation between OO metrics and software maintainability is investigated, and then, in terms of obtained maintainability indicator metrics, the maintainability change of an application due to usage of design patterns is observed.
The Expertise Effect on Web Accessibility Evaluation Methods
Brajnik, Giorgio; Yesilada, Yeliz; Harper, Simon (2011-01-01)
Web accessibility means that disabled people can effectively perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the web. Web accessibility evaluation methods are needed to validate the accessibility of web pages. However, the role of subjectivity and of expertise in such methods is unknown and has not previously been studied. This article investigates the effect of expertise in web accessibility evaluation methods by conducting a Barrier Walkthrough (BW) study with 19 expert and 57 nonexpert judges. The BW m...
The Role of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in Promoting Learner Autonomy
Ganioğlu, Arzu; Eröz Tuğa, Betil (2013-03-01)
Problem Statement: Teaching a language with the help of comput ers and the Internet has attracted the attention of many practitioners and researchers in the last 20 years, so the number of studies that investigate whether computers and the Internet promote language learning continues to increase. These studies have focused on exploring the beliefs and attitudes of learners and teachers towards computers and the Internet or on inquiring whether computers and the Internet increase the achievement levels of le...
