This study examines the ratio between length and body weight of 4191 specimens of a prevalent, tertiary tropic level Teleost fish, red mullet (Mullus barbatus) sampled using a standard survey protocol from more than 2500 km by the coasts of Turkey extending along the Mediterranean, Aegean, and the Black Sea. The study's primary aim was to investigate whether there is a correspondence between the body condition of the red mullet and the environmental status independently determined based on lower trophic levels of the water masses the species inhabits. Possible impacts of some intrinsic (fish length), extrinsic factors (bathymetry, abundance, and site), and numerical condition expressions on the outcomes were analyzed and eliminated. The results displayed a strong positive correlation between the fish condition index values and the ecosystem descriptor; the body condition of fish increased as ecological status improved from "bad" to "good/high". Based on this relationship and to facilitate the use of red mullet body condition as an ecosystem indicator, a set of target reference values addressing different ecological states have been proposed. Comparison of Source Regions Affecting SO42- and NO3- Concentrations at the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea Atmospheres
Dogan, G.; GÜLLÜ, GÜLEN; Karakas, D.; Tuncel, G. (Bentham Science Publishers Ltd., 2010-01-01)
In this study, source regions of atmospheric sulfate and nitrate in rural areas at the Black Sea and the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey are compared. Stations on the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea are located at Amasra and Antalya regions, respectively. Source regions of SO42- and NO3- are determined by using potential source contribution function (PSCF). Statistical significance of source regions assigned by PSCF were assured using bootstrapping with 3000 iterations. Source regions affecting sulfate and n...
Temperature strongly correlates with regional patterns of body size variation in Mediterranean small pelagic fish species
Hattab, Tarek; et. al. (2021-01-01)
In this study we consider the applicability of Bergmann's rule to the populations of small pelagic fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. Under Bergmann's rule, body size increases with decreasing temperature and increasing latitude. Although this mac-roecological pattern in body sizes is well established for many taxa of endotherms and ectotherms, it does not remain universal, and the proposed mechanisms underlying it are multiple and still lack consensus. Here we explored the occurrence of geographical bo...
Vertical distribution of marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus spp. in the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and eastern Mediterranean seas
Uysal, Zahit (2006-01-01)
The vertical distributions of the unicellular cyanobacteria Synechococcus were studied in several highly contrasting seas: the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. Cell abundances varied significantly on both vertical and horizontal scales in all physically and spatially discrete water masses. Epifluorescence microscope cell counts from all seas clearly showed that majority of the population remains suspended in the surface-mixed layer and decreases gradually towards the base of the...
Genetic structure of modern and ancient swordfish populations from coasts of Turkey
Yüncü, Eren; Togan, İnci Zehra; Department of Biology (2017)
In this study, partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and 8 microsatellite loci of swordfish collected from Northern Levantine Sea and Northern Aegean Sea were analyzed. Also same mtDNA region of ancient swordfish samples unearthed from Yenikapı excavation were sequenced. Obtained sequences were evaluated comparatively with the sequences from Balearic Sea, Ligurian Sea, Ionian Sea and Southern Aegean Sea, available in databases. Analysis of the molecular variance revealed a significant differentiation between We...
Current distribution of the small pelagic fish populations in the North Eastern Levantine Sea in relation to environmental conditions and predicting the impacts of temperature rise on their future distributions
Sakınan, Serdar; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2014)
Stocks of traditionally targeted fish species are in decline in the north eastern Levant Sea due to overfishing during recent decades, while catch statistics show a simultaneous increase in landings of commercially less valuable small pelagic species. Moreover, the number of species in the eastern Mediterranean is increasing due to Lessepsian migration and the response of native species to the continuous migration of lessepsian species is in question. Additionally, warming associated with climate change is ...
