Seasonal and spatial variation of bacterial production and abundance in the northern Levantine Sea
YUCEL, N. (National Documentation Centre (EKT), 2017-3-13)
Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in bacterial production and abundance in relation to ambient bio-physicochemical parameters has been investigated in the Levantine Sea. Five stations with different trophic states in an area extending from highly eutrophic Mersin bay to the mesotrophic Rhodes gyre area including the oligotrophic offshore waters were sampled four times. Integrated bacterial production varied between 6.1 and 90.3 g C m(-2) d(-1) with higher rates occurring during September 2012 in offshore w...
Seasonal chemical and mineralogical variability of atmospheric particles in the coastal region of the Northeast Mediterranean
Kubilay, NN; Saydam, AC; Yemenicioglu, S; Kelling, G; Kapur, S; Karaman, C; Akca, E (1997-02-01)
A time-serial analysis of atmospheric particles collected since 1990 at a coastal site bordering the northeastern Mediterranean Sea shows that the collected samples display seasonal patterns in both concentration and color. The 1990-91 and 1992 collections yield an annualised average of around 0.5 g/day dust loading reducing to around 0.3 g/day when the sea-salt contribution is excluded. The highest concentrations of atmospheric particles of continental origin for both natural (e.g. Fe, Mn) and anthropogeni...
Seasonal variation of the phytoplankton composition in the northern Levantine Sea
Yücel, Nebil; Uysal, Zahit; Tuğrul, Süleyman (2017-10-13)
Seasonal and spatial distribution of phytoplankton pigment composition in July & Sep 2012 and Mar & May 2013 was studied at five stations in different parts of the northern Levantine Sea from Mersin Bay to Rhodes Gyre. Total chlorophyll a concentrations varied 0.001 – 0.578 mg m-3 during the study. The highest value was measured in cyclonic Rhodes Gyre at 70 meters in Deep Chlorophyll Maximum (DCM). But, concentrations were found less than 0.1 mg m-3 in offshore waters and Rhodes Gyre. Seven phytoplankton g...
Seasonal variability of optical properties of aerosols in the Eastern Mediterranean
Vrekoussis, M; Liakakou, E; Koçak, Mustafa; Kubilay, N; Oikonomou, K; Sciare, J; Mihalopoulos, N (2005-12-01)
The aerosol optical properties (scattering and absorption coefficients) were investigated at two remote locations in the Eastern Mediterranean in conjunction with aerosol ion composition measurements: Finokalia in the Crete Island in Greece (March 2001-June 2002) and Erdemli in Turkey (July 1999-June 2000). Ambient light-scattering coefficient (sigma(sp-532 nm)) at Finokalia had a mean value of 50 +/- 23 Mm(-1) while at Erdemli this value was 90 +/- 160 Mm(-1), due to a severe dust event that occurred from ...
Seasonal variability of wind and thermohaline-driven circulation in the black sea: Modeling studies
Oguz, T; MalanotteRizzoli, P (1996-07-15)
The seasonal variability of the Black Sea circulation is studied using an eddy-resolving primitive equation model. A series of numerical experiments is carried out to determine the relative importance of wind stress, air-sea thermohaline fluxes, and river-induced lateral buoyancy forcing in driving the circulation on the monthly and seasonal timescales. A synthesis is made of the results with those obtained under yearly climatological conditions by Oguz et al. [1995] to assess whether the major circulation ...
