The soil moisture variable has critical importance in many areas such as climate, drought, water and energy cycle, weather forecasts and flood studies. Soil moisture data can be obtained using different methods such as remote sensing-, model- and station-based. Since station-based observations have representativeness errors in large scale, they have a great potential to provide the most accurate soil moisture information among all methods. In this study, different soil moisture products including AMSR-E, ASCAT, API, NOAH, and ESA-CCI are evaluated using observations between 2007 and 2011 collected over 76 stations maintained by General Directorate of Meteorology of Turkey. The accuracy of each product is analyzed over different soil type, vegetation cover and climate regime of stations. Also seasonality and anomaly components of the soil moisture products are analyzed separately. The overall correlation of soil moisture products over investigated stations show satisfactory performance of them in measuring surface soil moisture. The correlation statistics show average values of 0.63 for AMSR-E, 0.60 for ASCAT, 0.71 for ESA-CCI (v04.4), 0.61 for API, and 0.82 for NOAH products.

Evaluation of the consistency of station-based soil moisture measurements with hydrological model and remote sensing observations over Turkey
Bulut, Burak; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tuğrul; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Soil moisture is a critical parameter for many subjects like climate, drought, water and energy balance, weather prediction; yet the number of studies involving soil moisture has been limited in Turkey. Soil moisture parameter can be obtained using several different methods. Among the values obtained via different methods, station-based observations have the greatest potential to provide the most accurate soil moisture information, even though station based observations have the representativeness errors ov...
Estimation of Radar Based High Resolution Precipitation Product over Turkey
Yılmaz, Mustafa Tuğrul; Yücel, İsmail; Yılmaz, Koray Kamil (2016-10-10)
Precipitation is one of the most critical variables in many hydrometeorological applications such as drought and flood monitoring, climate change impact studies and water resources management. Particularly flood analysis and prediction type applications carried out over regions with heterogeneous precipitation pattern require high spatial resolution precipitation estimates. Accurate precipitation estimates can be obtained using various platforms, like ground-based stations, numerical weather prediction mode...
The impact of climate change on a Mediterranean shallow lake: insights based on catchment and lake modelling
Coppens, Jan; Trolle, Dennis; Jeppesen, Erik; Beklioğlu, Meryem (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-05-19)
Shallow lakes in the semi-arid climate zone of the Mediterranean are sensitive to drought due to the low annual precipitation and high evaporation. Changes in precipitation and temperature as projected by climate change scenarios will have an effect on the hydrology of these shallow lakes with secondary effects on nutrient dynamics and ecological state. In this study, we used a combined modelling approach that included the catchment model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and the lake model PCLake to st...
The assessment of socio-economic impacts of climate change in rural areas: the case of Konya
Özgür, Busen; Balaban, Osman; Department of City and Regional Planning (2019)
Climate change and its related events have made significant impacts on rural areas in socio-economic as well as environmental terms. Even though agriculture sector is a cause of climate change, agricultural production itself has also been adversely affected by the climate problem. Climate change also affects rural development and conservation policies in terms of the problem it causes such as natural disasters, migration, poverty, diseases, and food security. Moreover, the rural and agricultural impacts of ...
A Proteomic approach to the comparison of two pine species: proteomes of pinus brutia and pinus sylvestris under environmental stress
Yılmaz, Can; İşcan, Mesude; Güray, Tülin; Department of Biochemistry (2013)
Drought and cold are environmental factors that affect the development and dispersion of plant species. In this study, two pine species adapted to different environmental conditions: Pinus brutia Ten. (Turkish red pine) and Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) were subjected to a proteome research under those stresses. 20 trees from each species, located in the same region and elevation at Yalıncak area in METU Campus, were marked and sampled for their needles, three times in a year: at the end of dry and hot s...
