The hot Electron Light Emission and Lasing in Semiconductor Heterostructure devices (HELLISH-1)is novel surface emitter consisting of a GaAs quantum well (QW), within the depletion region, on the n side of Ga1-xAlxAs p-n junction. It utilises hot electron transport parallel to the layers and injection of hot electron hole pairs into the quantum well through a combination of mechanisms including tunnelling, thermionic emission and diffusion of 'lucky' carriers. Super Radiant HELLISH-I is an advanced structure incorporating a lower distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). Combined with the finite reflectivity of the upper semiconductor-air interface reflectivity it defines a quasi-resonant cavity enabling emission output from the top surface with a hi,higher spectral purity. The output power has increased by two orders of magnitude and reduced the full width at half maximum (FWHM) to 20nm. an upper DBR added to the structure defines HELLISH-VCSEL which is currently the first operational hot electron surface emitting laser and lases at room temperature with a 1.5nm FWHM. In this work we demonstrate and compare the operation of UB-HELLISH-1 and HELLISH-VCSEL using experimental and theoretical reflectivity spectra over an extensive temperature range.

Observation of Oscillatory Surface Reactions of Riboflavin, Trolox, and Singlet Oxygen Using Single Carbon Nanotube Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Sen, Fatih; Boghossian, Ardemis A.; Sen, Selda; Ulissi, Zachary W.; Zhang, Jingqing; Strano, Michael S. (2012-12-01)
Single-molecule fluorescent microscopy allows semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to detect the adsorption and desorption of single adsorbate molecules as a stochastic modulation of emission intensity. In this study, we identify and assign the signature of the complex decomposition and reaction pathways of riboflavin in the presence of the free radical scavenger Trolox using DNA-wrapped SWCNT sensors dispersed onto an aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coated surface. SWCNT emission is qu...
A low-power robust humidity sensor in a standard CMOS process
Okcan, Burak; Akın, Tayfun (2007-11-01)
This paper presents a low-cost thermal-conductivity-based humidity sensor implemented using a 0.6-mu m CMOS process, where suspended p-n junction diodes are used as the humidity-sensitive elements. The measurement method uses the difference between the thermal conductivities of air and water vapor at high temperatures by comparing the output voltages of two hea ted and thermally isolated diodes; one of which is exposed to the environment and has a humidity-dependent thermal conductance, while the other is s...
The quantum confined Stark effect in silicon nanocrystals
Kulakci, Mustafa; SERİNCAN, UĞUR; Turan, Raşit; Finstad, Terje G. (IOP Publishing, 2008-11-12)
The quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) in Si nanocrystals embedded in a SiO(2) matrix is demonstrated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at room and cryogenic temperatures. It is shown that the PL peak position shifts to higher wavelengths with increasing applied electric field, which is expected from carrier polarization within the quantum dots. It is observed that the effect is more pronounced at lower temperatures due to the improved carrier localization at the lowest energy states of the quantum d...
An analytical Network for Switched Reluctance Machines with Highly Saturated Regions
Yu, Q.; Laudensack, C.; Gerling, D. (2011-09-10)
In this paper an analytical network for flux linkage and flux density distribution of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) is developed based on the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC). Due to the positional dependent reluctance in the air gap, all paths are separately modeled. Instead of using empirical equations, the effective air gap reluctance is analyzed from machine geometry. Due to high local saturation in the teeth, the machine is discretized into adjustable elements. In addition, the slot leakage and ...
A Numerical approach for the solutions of fluid dynamics problems in the presence of magnetic field
Oğlakkaya, Fatma Sidre; Bozkaya, Canan; Department of Mathematics (2018)
This thesis is conducted to investigate numerically the two-dimensional steady or unsteady, laminar flow of viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluids in complex geometries subject to either uniform inclined magnetic field or nodal magnetic sources. Specifically, the hydromagnetic natural/mixed convection of either conventional fluid or water-based nanofluid flow and the heat transfer are considered in irregular enclosures with wavy walls. The equations governing the steady magnetohydrodynam...
