Removal of nitrate from groundwater by using algae culture

Although groundwater is more reliable and clean water resource when it is used as a drinking water, it is difficult to treat once it is polluted. One of the most important pollution paremeters in groundwater is nitrate which might be discharged by domestic or industrial wastes, agricultural activities, fertilizers and animal wastes. Even though denitrification, ion exchange, reverse osmos are widely used treatment methods for nitrate removal, biological treatment methods have effectively been also used. Nitrate removal from groundwater by microalgae is used as an alternative method in biological treatment methods. On the other hand, there are some topics which need to be investigated about chemical compositon of groundwater and microalgae growth.

Effect of particle size on resistance to chloride for hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene in water
Karahan, Selin; Çelik, Gökhan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2022-8)
Contamination of groundwater by chlorinated compounds is an important environmental hazard to humanity because worldwide drinking water demand is generally supplied by groundwater. Chlorinated pollutants, especially trichlorethylene (TCE), are released to the environment due to its frequent use in industrial applications. This highly toxic chemical poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. In this regard, cleaning of groundwater from TCE is of great importance. Catalytic hydrodechlorinatio...
Removal of pesticides from secondary treated urban wastewater by reverse osmosis
ATEŞ, NURAY; UZAL, NİĞMET; Yetiş, Ülkü; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (2022-04-01)
The residues of pesticides that reach water resources from agricultural activities in several ways contaminate drinking water resources and threaten aquatic life. This study aimed to investigate the performance of three reverse osmosis (RO) membranes (BW30-LE, SW30-XLE, and GE-AD) in rejecting four different pesticides (tributyl phosphate, flutriafol, dicofol, and irgarol) from secondary treated urban wastewater and also to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the rejection of these pesticides. RO experiment...
Determination of thmfp of the reservoirs in Turkey : kinetics aspect
Artuğ, Mine; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2004)
Chlorine is still the most commonly used disinfectant in many water treatment plants all over the World. However, studies conducted demonstrated that the chlorine reacts with the natural organic matter (NOM) in source waters, and leads to the formation of a variety of chlorinated organic compounds, disinfection by-products (DBPs). Among these, the most common are the trihalomethanes (THMs). In this study, kinetics of the THM formation was investigated. Kinetic experiments were carried out with the raw water...
Removal of Pesticide from Water with Fenton-like Process: Effectiveness of a new heterogeneous catalyst (Fenton Benzeri Proses ile Sulardan Pestisit Giderimi: Yeni bir heterojen katalizörün etkinliğinin araştırılması)

Extensive utilization of pesticides in the form of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides result in surface water pollution through runoff from agricultural lands and urban discharges. Besides, their very low concentrations (μg/L or ng/L) in surface water bodies and in domestic wastewaters, removal of these pollutants in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are recommended due to being highly persistent, toxic, bio-accumulative and hence dangerous for aquatic ecosystems. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are...
Removing algae from stabilization pond effluents by using trickling filters
Kaya, Devrim; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
The objective of this study is to remove turbidity originating from algae present in oxidation ponds effluents by an easy and inexpensive method. For this reason, a novel lab-scale Step Feed Dual Treatment (SFDT) process was constructed and the efficiency of trickling filter (TF) to remove algae and organic matter was investigated. SFDT process developed in this study is the unique, inexpensive and new system to scavenge algae from oxidation pond effluents. In this system, influent is first treated in a sta...
