MAPPING MODERN CAMPUSES: “AN IMAGINATIVE PROJECTION BACKWARD IN TIME”
Yürekli, Yurdanur Melike; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2023-1-19)
This study aims to map a specific network of modernism that embodies operational projections. Based on Genz and Lucas-Drago’s definition, mapping is understood as a technique to generate a representation of spaces and places of the “actors” and their relation to each other. Mapping modern campuses, here, are interpreted in multiple contexts and considered both a research tool, an interface, and a visualization problem for revealing the network. University campus as an urban model particularly after the...
CONSERVATION OF MODERN RESIDENTIAL HERITAGE: DEVELOPING PRINCIPLES AND PROPOSALS FOR ‘MERBANK HOUSES’ IN ANKARA
SÖZEN, MELİS; AYKAÇ LEIDHOLM, PINAR; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2022-9-1)
This thesis focuses on the conservation of mid 20th century residential architecture through the case of Merbank Houses in Ankara, which has emerged as a residential area in the 1950s. Starting from the 1950s, Ankara became the subject of radical changes in political and socio-economic context, and in terms of city planning, built environment, and architectural practice. The state-led architectural practice, which had previously been dominated by foreign architects, began to be headed by local architects. T...
MODERNIZATION IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE: AN EXAMINATION OF THE STATE-ALIGNED IRANIAN AND TURKISH NEWSPAPERS IN THE 1920s-1940s
Jaberi, Mojtaba; Çınar, Kürşat; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2022-7-23)
The present thesis aims at examining and comparing the ways in which the various aspects of modernization were presented and promoted by the Iranian and Turkish elites on the front pages of the Iranian Ettelaat and Koushesh and the Turkish Ulus (Hâkimiyet-i Milliye) and Cumhuriyet newspapers in the 1920s-1940s. Modernization and Selectorate theories have been used as the theoretical pillars of the present thesis in order to delve into the specific ways in which Iranian and Turkish states/elites tried to tra...
ON THE EFFECTS OF INFLOW CONDITIONS ON THE WAKE OF WIND TURBINE MODELS AND POROUS DISCS
Hassanein, Abdelrahman Hisham Ahmed Sabri; Perçin, Mustafa; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1-18)
The study investigates the effect of two inflow conditions on the wake of a model wind turbine, namely, homogenous isotropic turbulence intensity and streamwise gust. For the effect of the freestream turbulence intensity, the wake of a porous disc with a comparable thrust coefficient was used to further highlight the differences in their wakes and decay characteristics. Results show that the wake of a wind turbine model has a faster decay rate than porous discs under both freestream turbulence intensities. ...
THE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY CONVERGENCE ON CROSS-SECTORAL CO-EVOLUTION: THE CASE OF AUTOMOTIVE & ICT SECTORS
Saraçoğlu, Duygu; Akçomak, İbrahim Semih; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2021-7-7)
Recent developments show that convergence, particularly technology convergence, is one of the main trends that shape the new economy. Such that, the dominant sector is being created by more than one converging sector that, in turn, provides the infrastructure for wealth and innovation creation by all sectors. Thus, convergence is becoming the basis of all sectors and it reduces the threshold of transforming the economy. Moreover, recent studies suggest that key enabling technologies (KETs) that have d...
