This thesis focuses on the conservation of mid 20th century residential architecture through the case of Merbank Houses in Ankara, which has emerged as a residential area in the 1950s. Starting from the 1950s, Ankara became the subject of radical changes in political and socio-economic context, and in terms of city planning, built environment, and architectural practice. The state-led architectural practice, which had previously been dominated by foreign architects, began to be headed by local architects. The search for a national style were left behind in the favour of a more functionalist and rationalist approach. This radical change affected not only the practice of local architects during 1950s and early 1960s but also produced results in built environment, especially in the residential architecture. As an important example of Ankara’s modernisation, the cooperative houses for the members of Central Bank, Merbank Houses project was approved in 1957, which was designed by architect Sedat Çağlar as a housing complex in different typologies together with public amenities. Currently, all public buildings and open areas have already been demolished as have many of the residential buildings. Those that remain are subjected to alteration and demolishment due to the rapid transformation of the district and changing demands of their users. Thus, this thesis aims to document, analyse, and assess the significance of Merbank Houses in Keçiören district as an important example of mid-20th century residential architectural heritage in Turkey and to develop conservation principles and proposals for their users.
